Re: BWCA - Questions and a Brief Trip Report

Trip Reports from the BWCA always touch my spirit and glad you were able to explore the area. I was up on Kawishawi/Malberg area in the Fall and was going to meander over to Trail Lake. I made it as far as Boze Lake and honkered at the private campsite for 3 days - saw no one else. Next spring I pla...

Re: TR 8/11 - 8/19 2015. Kari and Wally hike the East end.

Thanks for report... I have always wanted to get back to Lane Cove and maybe someday on another Five Finger Canoe trip. That couple mile double back uphill seems to hinder my selection of Lane Cove on hiking trips. Daisy Farm my be busy at times, but it offers the Peterson Presentation and a lot of ...

Re: Isle Royale Canoe Route for Our First Visit

With the target lakes you have noted, another option is available. Because of your open water route on the North side, I am assuming you have proper respect for the Big Lake in regards to canoeing......so...... Day 1 (Sat): Arrive Saturday at Rock Harbor and get outta dodge to Caribou Island or dist...

Web Cam Escape

I seem to check the Mott Island and Tobin Harbor Web Cams too frequently - One can only daydream so much. Just checked to check out the Greenstone Skies and was surprised to see the Ranger III docked. It has been too long since my last trip on the Ranger.... so am I wrong that the Ranger is supposed...

Re: Ferry to Isle in late September

I agree with JerryB in clockwise direction for Feldtmann, under normal circumstances. However, the time period for your trip may (I don't know) coincide with peak fall color for Maples. There is nothing like taking a stroll through sunlit bronze canopy and the Island Mine area has densest Maple popu...

Re: NPS to address IR wolf issue

I had planned on listening to this NPR radio segment live yesterday, but found myself busy doing other things. Before I listen to and forget to post afterwards,
I am posting link to article and podcast.

Re: Newbie questions ....

All said is what i would do on a quick trip to Rock Harbor Lodge. In regards to canoe access to Look out Louise, you can also access from Tobin Harbor/Duncan Bay Portage trail; this is a much shorter paddle if that is a concern. You would then have a couple mile hike along the Greenstone Ridge to Lo...

Re: Is GPS recommended on Minong

My hiking group got disorientated only once on the entire length of Minong as Phil. The trail is less traveled, but is usually very visible. Sometimes the trail is not as noticeable on the rocky ledges, but your intuition should guide you as well as the cairns. If you do lose trail, just backtrack. ...

Re: Family trip Intinerary feedback

The distance traveled on the Voyager from Windigo/McCargoe and Chippewa/Windigo is an treat with smooth waters. You get a good view of those section shorelines as boat travels as close to island as possible. I would suggest that your family have their rain jackets and pants on or available (for warm...

Re: Backpacking with kids

Consider continuing from Windigo to McCargo Cove on the Voyager. The middle lake region offers a rather short bisect of the island to Chippewa Harbor. From Chippewa Harbor you can board the Voyager back to Windigo and return to Grand Portage. You will have McCargo Cove, West Chickenbone, Lake Richie...

Re: Dehydrated Chicken and Beef

I have attempted to dehydrate most proteins and the resulting meals were not pleasant. The exception is ground beef and those Fake Crab Strips (Krab) - which both turned out to be satisfactory for outdoor travel meals. I do dehydrate most of my veggies, but will purchase all other proteins in the fr...

Re: Isle Royale First Timers

Glad you enjoyed the trip and were able to see a considerable amount of the island in a few days. Did you see any signs of moose or wolf?
How did you get to Three Mile from Chickenbone (Double Back Greenstone or through Moskey Basin)?

and now to plan another trip to the island.

Excited and hopeful your trip to Boundary Waters is all as expected. Sawbill outfitters at entry point is a welcome back after your return to the world. It is kind of like Rock Harbor Lodge/Grill/Store after a long trip..... showers, ice cream, beer, Wi-Fi ..... Let us know how trip went on return. JJ

Re: It's still May on the Island

How was the fishing? Fishing was tough. I had planned on three walleye fish frys and ended up filleting a couple of Northern Pike to substitute. I use artificial bait and it is best to use live minnows for walleye in the early season so that is my excuse. (I should have tripped to some Lake Trout L...
