TR: 5/2022 [Windigo to RH via Minong and GRT]

This is going to come in installments. Tl, dr: a super-duper fun early season trip, just on (or over!) the verge of what I could handle. The more time I spent on the island, the happier I got. I am not going to claim that I was always warm. Intersecting with fonixmunkee and his crew (including someo...

Re: TR: 5/18-5/22/22, Belle Isle & Rock Harbor

fonixmunkee, you beat me to the honor of posting the year's first TR---and posted one fully deserving of that honor! The real honor was getting to meet --- and learn so much from --- you and your crew. Thanks for the early-season trip report! We're headed for the Minong next week, which makes your s...

Re: Feldtmann loop or not

Here's one more vote for looping the loop, for all the reasons above + the pieces of mining history you can see on the walk up toward island mine from Siskiwit!

Re: Does 47 Year Ago Qualify as History?

Thanks for these! You got around. The "70s backpacks" photo should be an album cover! I especially like the futurist on the far left, who looks to be rocking an *internal frame* pack.

Re: What would you do?

My youngest daughter and I will hike three days down on the Greenstone and three days back on the Minong. It sounds like you're way better acquainted with the island and its trails than I am! Is the plan to be out 6 nights all together, or 7 (e.g., 3 enroute to Windigo on the Greenstone, a night at...

Re: What would you do?

Just a followup question, WMI Hiker: Are you interested in making time for the sake of making time, or are you on a tight schedule, or . . . ? (I guess a variation on this question is: what's the larger plan that this the stage out of Rock Harbor fits into?)

Re: What would you do?

If making time was what I cared about, for either route, I'd start on the Tobin Harbor trail, which goes more quickly than its (very fun and scenic) shoreline counterpart. I walked an approximation of each of those routes in the last few years, and can report roughly how long they took. (Obviously, ...

I slice open two edges with scissors, turn them inside out, and lick them clean! (This is another reason it's a good thing I backpack alone.)

Re: Moosewatch for Educators

That is so excellent! I really wanted to Moosewatch this year---I even tricked my brother into gifting me his old-school external frame Kelty backpack, the better to strap moose parts to --- but none of the dates meshed with my over-constrained schedule. Please take notes and report back!!

Re: TR, mid Sep 2021 MC, TH, HL, Malone

Hooray for an out of season trip report, and on an elegant route! Does the trail to Malone still cross one of the creeks near the western end of Siskiwit lake on a beaver dam? If it does, was it difficult, travelling the direction you were travelling in, to figure out that it does? (I traveled the o...

Re: Huginnin Cove Loop: Clockwise or Counterclockwise?

Go with your inclination! The whole trail is nice, but the stretch, east of the campsite, along the lake and beside the jumbly, massive, mossive, boulders, was the one I found the most striking. I walked the loop clockwise. If there were sustained ridge climbs on the western side, they didn't make m...

Re: August Boy Scout itinerary

We’ll see how everyone is doing and whether they feel like climbing back onto the ridge east of Daisy Farm. Do you think it’s worth at least going to Mt Ojibway on our way into Daisy Farm? Otherwise we’d take the more western trail into camp. My $.02: it is, if you've got the energy! The more weste...

Re: August Boy Scout itinerary

I think that's a nice itinerary --- the option for little Minong, a little Greenstone, plus some trails that cross the island's corduroy. Very subjectively, your hardest days are at the start. But you're unlikely to run short of daylight: if your troops are troopers, you should be fine. A few quick ...
