If this is to be believed (not sure I do), there is now 6-12" of ice connecting Isle Royale to Ontario.

Re: Winter Study Underway
Great news! After missing last year because of Covid, much to be learned this year. Looking forward to what they find.

Re: Ice Bridge Forming?
Assuming the ice bridge forms, the wolves will have the freedom to choose to stay on the rock, or freedom to migrate to the mainland. Win win for them and newborn moose calves. Or new wolves come over from Ontario and/or Minnesota. Maybe five years ago, two wolves came over from the mainland, spent...

Re: Ice Bridge Forming?
I know some of the wolves have collars and the researchers can monitor them, but hoping the researchers are on the Island so they can monitor any movement towards the ice bridge. I'm pretty sure the winter study is on this year. They normally get there around January 20th. As for the forming ice br...

Ice Bridge Forming?
Anybody who lives in the upper midwest knows how cold it's been the past three weeks. Amasa, Michigan had -39 F last week. These cold temps have really accelerated ice creation on Lake Superior. Looks like the beginnings of an ice bridge may be forming. Last year, this didn't happen until mid-Februa...

Re: Itinerary question with an inflatable kayak
"Your Sea Eagle is not the craft I would choose for use on Lake Superior, but in sheltered water you may be ok. If you are planning to load up and move camp to McCargoe Cove, using the Sea Eagle, that's a much riskier thing. Do you have the skills to handle a paddlecraft in 3-ft waves and a 15m...

Re: Favorite Zero Day Spots
For me, probably Malone. Swim or kayak in either Siskiwit Lake or Malone Bay. Take a day hike up to Greenstone. Not many hikers because it's a dead end. Quiet.

I think you nailed it. It'd be interesting to find the same location and take a picture from the same vantage point today. I suspect the scene hasn't changed much.

As drclark mentions, old negatives can be printed backwards. I "flipped" the picture in Photoshop. Maybe this will make more sense.

Re: Podcast with Superintendent Swanke
Finally had the chance to listen to this podcast. I thought it interesting that Island has had 6,400 visitors as of August. I figured it'd be more.

Re: Final Horne fire update
......Light smoke plumes could be seen on both sides of the Greenstone Ridge. The fire was left to slowly burn itself out this fall and winter as rain and snow eventually blanket the island. The final map, reflecting more accurate measurements of the burned area, showed the fire at 335 acres..........
