Re: 1936 Fire
Doh. Case of the Mondays. Just realized I said west of Siskiwit Camp, but it's west of Siskiwit Falls, which is of course the Malone Camp. The NatGeo map shows where they were - for instance, the "Falls" marker shown above appears on the topo map as "663 Delta/Triangle" - Marking...
Re: 1936 Fire
A good ten plus years ago, "Bucket Bob" turned me on to the Isle Royale version of geocaching, going out and finding the various survey and triangulation markers used to map the island in the late 30s. When you find some of these, like the "Falls" point west of the Siskiwit camp,...

Re: Pontoon boat
I can't say I have, but most of the pontoons purchased in the upper midwest are not the coastal designs that have larger and thicker floats designed for larger waters. I do hope this is something you've been planning for a bit, and it's not the result of ferry services being suspended.

Re: Isle Royale Webcams
When I was on Mott a couple years ago I went and found it and took a picture. She looked due for an update back then, too... Glad to know it's getting a refresh!

I know they added WIndigo a while back (last year?) but I hadn't checked Tobin lately. Looks like Midwest Ed may have gotten his wish to replace it or move it, because the current image seems much better and the camera also seems to be pointing in a different direction than I remember. Enjoy your fa...

WOOHOO! A Trip Report! Thank you for filling our need this year, no worries on the length. We could read these all day. I'm so glad your 'first' trip went so well, and the kids are already discussing the next one. That's the hallmark of a successful trip, but also perhaps why Isle Royale is the most...

Re: Sea kayak
I'll be blunt. I think your options are very limited if existent at all, short of the ferry services returning to some form of limited service. I even looked up if you could ship your kayak via USPS, but using some random dimensions it would appear too large. I can only think of two legitimate metho...

Re: June 2020 First Timers w/Kids Itinerary #2
If this is your first time on the island, I'm inclined to recommend saving Lane Cove for the end of the trip. While that first day's hike shakes the legs and gets them ready, that following morning when you need to hike out of Lane Cove might sour the experience. Best to tackle that once you have yo...

Re: Lake Desor - How is it pronounced?
...As I think back, maybe I DO put the emphasis on the last syllable. It's so difficult to sound out by yourself and I've been told I already talk too much to myself. :P Since it's such a short word, and just two syllables, I say pick a version and say it with conviction, and who is to question you?...

Re: Lake Desor - How is it pronounced?
I've almost always heard it with emphasis on the first syllable, and most frequently as "Deh'-sore" but occasionally "Day'-sore." According to The Place Names of Isle Royale - Edward Desor was an assistant geologist with the Jackson Survey of 1847. He was the first to describe th...

Re: Little Todd to Huginnin Cove
I think you'll have your answer on the first day. Normally most of us would tell you to "take the Tobin Harbor trail out of Rock Harbor" but I'm going to change it up, and say "Stay on the Rock Harbor trail." See how you feel after hiking into Moskey Basin. There are portions of ...

Re: Isle Royale National Park Closed for 2020
Confusing. No ferry service but you can take the float plane? I would guess it's because they run on-demand, not on-schedule, if that makes sense. I would imagine the costs of doing business are covered exclusively by the ticket price and having only a couple folks on the plane, whereas the boats n...

So unfortunate. In a follow-up article, some folks will recognize the Grand Marais Fire Chief, Ben Silence. (AKA Capt Benny of the Voyageur)

Re: 1 person tent (from REI topic)
My BA Copper Spur has served me well. I went with the 2man (which, let's be honest, is really like 1.5) because I like to have a little more interior room after a 5-day Minong rain-out, and was willing to carry the weight if it meant more comfort on a rainy afternoon. With the dual side doors and ve...
