Re: TR: 6-13 to 6-22-14 [Win-Sisk-Feldt-Win-Hug-Win]
I would think Siskiwit isn't too far for and experienced hiker it is 12 miles, but they arent overly hard. We got on the trail around 11:00 and got into camp around 17:30, and we were going overly slow with the extra's we added to our group. If you are looking to take pictures and see wildlife I rec...

Re: Weather & Bug Report 10JUL-14JUL
I dont know... I am not an entimologist... all I know is what they told us, and that was that the ticks there wont bite humans. Which to us sounded really cool! Apparently the moose dont like it since they feed on them in the winter and come spring they use photographs to figure out how many ticks t...

Re: Weather & Bug Report 10JUL-14JUL
From my conversations with the rangers/ researchers on the island. There are no ticks on the island other than moose ticks which apparently dont bite humans. I dont know why they dont but I thought that was great news! The researchers noted the lack of other ticks was probably because of a lack of d...

Re: Running
Based on the experiece or lack there of on trail running I would stick to the paved paths in rock harbor for your runs. I would recomend taking hikes from the lodge also, they will be good for working those legs too! A 10K is more endurance than speed anyway so get out and hike up them hills!

Re: WIFI availability
I didnt try it in Windigo mid June, but some others there did. They could always connect to it when on the store porch, but the internet was usually not available. As a disclaimer it was foggy the whole time they were trying, which is why they were trying. They were stuck with the sea plane not flyi...

Re: Superior Water temps
well... the guy I went with in mid June thought it was warm enough to go swimming. He jumped off the dock in Windigo with a couple of the poeple who were living there. They said it was warmer than the 36 the bouy said, but I dont believe them. They got out supper quick and were hooting and hollering...

Re: Chippewa Harbor via Lake Superior by canoe
Canoe's are easy to rig on a pack even if you dont know the dimensions before starting. Pick a wide gunnel dimension and tie a stick on the pack that is that wide or a little bit wider. This will work on the narrower ones also. You could also make a Y or T on top of the pack frame with the legs poin...

Re: Chippewa Harbor via Lake Superior by canoe
here is a wild idea to help your problem... If you have an old frame pack (or a new one) you can modify the frame to cradle the yoke then all the weight is transfered to your hips just like you were backpacking. Not my picture, but something like this http://www.sandslave.com/knupac/IMG_9530.jpg I h...

0 degree bag in June? I would have died... I was sweating in my 45 bag some nights.
Sounds like a great trip! Nice pictures, sorry about the knee. I have had that problem before it can really put a damper on the trip, hope you made the best of it.

Re: Old Trails
From what i saw of that section of the Feldtmann ridge trail it would have been hard to identify a non maintained trail turn off. That section was very overgrown some places 7' high. We were lucky we could keep track of where the feldtmann trail was. Would be cool to find some of these old trails th...
