Re: TR: 6-13 to 6-22-14 [Win-Sisk-Feldt-Win-Hug-Win]

Very nice trip and pictures. You saw two different wolves! You were incredibly fortunate, especially considering the present population is so low. The one you got a picture of seemed awfully emboldened. How far away were you and how long did he remain there? p.s. I wonder if the overloaded girls got...

Strangest thing you've seen on a IR trail or at a campsite?

OK, After the XMAS lights story, I have to ask. What's the strangest thing you've seen on an IR trail or at a n IRcampsite? #1 for me was the couple I met at McCargoe Cove Campground. They were having dinner on a full size foot locker, sitting on wooden chairs. They had a red and white checkered tab...

Incorporate this alcohol powder into a hops and malt flavored Fizzy or Alka-Seltzer tablet and voilà, back country beer! :D

Isle Royale Geological Field Guide & Trip Report from 2013

I just ran across this field trip report from last season, published by The Institute on Lake Superior Geology. It's a very interesting Field Guide to Isle Royale Geology compiled by geologists from Michigan Tech University. Online version: http://www.geo.mtu.edu/~raman/SilverI/IRKeweenawRift/Welcom...

Re: Water treatment?

I too have never chemically treated water on Isle Royale, but just to be clear, almost all filters do NOT remove viruses. One should always maintain an awareness of where their water to be filtered is coming from. If it is down stream from, or nearby to, any sort of human activity (e.g. outhouse) th...

Re: Itinerary - Late July to Early August

Day 1: Arrive on Queen, take water taxi to Chippewa Harbor. Day 2: Chippewa Harbor to Moskey Basin. Day 3: Moskey Basin to Daisy Farm. Day 4: Layover at Daisy and hike to Mt Ojibway. Day 5: Daisy to 3 Mile. Day 6: 3 Mile to R.H. to home. I really like this plan. The water taxi cost of $212 for 4 pe...

Re: Stick Stoves - still OK to use?

When u check in and get your itinerary from the park service, they have a list of amenities at each site. Other folks could chime in and let u know where else has them. Just another backup system to consider. The National Park Service has an annual Isle Royale newsletter called "The Greenstone...

Indeed. There is an age old engineering "saying":

You can have it correct.
You can have it inexpensive.
You can have it on time.
Pick two.

******

A backpacking corollary might be:

You can have it lightweight.
You can have it inexpensive.
You can have it durable.
Pick two.

Re: Itinerary August 1-6

You guys are joking around but my first trip to IR was also my first backpacking experience. Have you seen those flashlights that use the 6 volt lantern battery? My 2 pound flashlight was ultra lightweight compared to the 12 inch cast iron fry pan I brought. Those things and about 80 more pounds wen...

Am I suppose to click a link somewhere on Kevin's website to access the rest of the trip report or has it just not be posted yet? Sometimes I miss those blasted little hyperlinks or forget to click an index so that the other subfields are displayed. Look in the right column at the top of the post y...

Re: DEET: Spray or Lotion?

Here in Northern Illinois the tiny gnats are out in full force. I cannot remember them ever being this annoying. They don't bite but you can't go outside with inhaling or eating several. My neighbor says he uses vanilla to keep them away. I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for your report. Your daughter sounds like she's a real hoot. Glad you were all able to meet Rolf and Candy. I'm very much looking forward to your pictures. Can you reveal some details on your home made 6 oz. hip waders?

Re: Solo Hiking- First trip to IR Rock Harbor Loop

I ran from three mile to rock and back in 82 minutes to pick up 18 beers last weekend :) At least you were a willing participant. This reminded me of a Clint Eastwood movie, "The Eiger Saction". George Kennedy is training Eastwood on a long vertical technical climb. At the summit Kennedy ...
