Re: Food thread?
Welcome to the forums, Nitsirk! This isn't a bad idea. We usually throw these types of suggestions up to the board to see how they feel about it. Would we want to see a permanent thread for recipes/food, or a complete new sub forum for it? A thread would appear, more than likely, under the Gear &...

Re: Books I read on the Island
Hey Fonnix, Are we confusing Into the Wild with A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson? Into the Wild is about Chris McCandless who died in an abandoned bus in Alaska. The book by Bryson about his Appalachian Trail hike was a hoot. We sure are! Yikes, my bad. Yes, my reference about a "hilarious b...

Re: 4 night trip, need advice
Skip Island Mine. The only thing it's viable for is staying there if you can't get to Windigo. There's barely any water there (it's a little damned-up creek that tastes like dirt and does a number on your filter). There's no view, and the campsites--as Philranger said--are about on par with that of ...

TR: McCargoe to Malone Bay, aka The Trip That Almost Didn't
I think I've delayed long enough and now will deliver my not-so-exciting trip report for my first trip of 2009. Details, details: Via the Voyageur II, four days on IR, four guys, going from McCargoe Cove to Todd Harbor, to Hatchet Lake, ending in Malone Bay and taking the VII back to Grand Portage. ...

Re: Books I read on the Island
JohnHens and Nick, I seriously am laughing aloud again. I had to tell my girlfriend why I was laughing at the computer. That was a classic exchange. Nick, "Into the Wild" is a hilarious book. At least while they get lost, stuck in storms, and nearly starve to death they maintain a good sen...

Re: 4 night trip, need advice
Welcome to the forums, WalkingCrow! Glad you found us. There isn't a "bad hike" on Isle Royale, and with four nights on the island, you'll really have enough time to experience a good part of the island. I'm going to start by recommending the Feldtmann loop (going either direction), becaus...

I don't think enough people are appreciating this hilarious bit right here, Nick. I laughed for quite a bit.Nick wrote:and JohnH would have left the island before we arrived.
Good trip report. I'm glad you got out finally after being thwarted so many times, and congrats on 165 miles of trail!

Well, the Wenonah no longer sits in Superior. It might be on it's way up the shore to GP!

John,
It's awesome that you do things like selflessly volunteer your time to help out Isle Royale. I applaud you sir, and thank you for sharing your experience.

Re: Hanging food at campsites?
In my experience, food is safe if you keep it in your tent AND you are in the campsite. If you aren't in the campsite, it's best to hang the food as the squirrels will go right through the tent if no one is around to scare them off a little.

sgerbs: I think you've started a topic with some very good info in it, so I've moved it to the "Gear and Supplies" subforum and stickied it (so it stays at the top of the subforum). Hopefully other people will be able to benefit from the info that's gleaned in this topic. Thanks to everyon...
