Re: Fourth Edition of DuFresne's guide book - differences?
I can't imagine that there's significant substantive changes. Isle Royale just doesn't change that much

Re: Canoe Outfitter in the Copper Harbor Area
Frankly, I don't recommend an Isle Royale canoe or kayak trip for anyone without paddling experience. I just don't believe it's a place one should be learning to paddle. Ingo, Is that your opinion for a trip limited to only inland lakes even with just minimum amount of proper gear and preparation? ...

Re: Canoe Outfitter in the Copper Harbor Area
Also for a first water trip at Isle Royale, what would you recommend; a canoe, a kayak, or a double kayak? And why? Thanks. Frankly, I don't recommend an Isle Royale canoe or kayak trip for anyone without paddling experience. I just don't believe it's a place one should be learning to paddle. The w...

Re: First trip to IR and using a canoe. Any suggestions?
What are your options for a canoe? And how much experience to you have? 16' - 17' are typical 2 person canoes but overall design is important. You'll have a 2+ mile portage so weight is a consideration also.

There's a "view map" button near the top of the page that works. The "click here" link under Park Map on the Map page is broken.LeftOvers wrote:There's a link, which I can't open, on the IRNP website for a park map. Hope they fix that soon.

Re: Canoe Outfitter in the Copper Harbor Area
Is there a place to rent canoe or kayaks in the Houghton area? Also, aren't people able to rent them at the rock harbor lodge or is that only for day trips and not for several days on the island? Yes you can rent canoes in Rock Harbor, both for day paddling and longer trips. But they are aluminum, ...

Re: MV Sandy Schedule
It's saying you can hitch a ride on the tour boat for $15.50 (2011 prices) without taking the tour. I suppose you have to sit in the back and promise not to listen on the way over  . Funny I don't remember hearing it called "Water Bus Service" before, but I guess it makes sense--if t...

Re: Backcountry Hiking...Thoughts and Advice Please.
re Lookout Louise: There are 2 other options for Lookout Louise. First is to take a water taxi to the Hidden Lake dock from Rock Harbor--that is by reservation only. The other is to take the tour boat (the MV Sandy) on a Tues or Thurs morning--presumably you'd come in the day before and spend the ni...

My dividend is showing up on-line now, but the 20% any one item for members won't be until the 24th, according to the local REI store.

Re: Whats the current wolf status?
I was reading the blog about the study and it seems there is only one female wolf left on the Isle Royale, is this true? From my reading that's what it sounds like. And maybe only 8 wolves on the island--6 in the Chippewa Harbor pack and the mating pair on the west end. Hoping they've missed someth...

Re: Canoe Outfitter in the Copper Harbor Area
It's been a few years, but the last time I looked I couldn't find anyone around C.H. or Houghton. I rented from Sylvannia Outfitters in Watersmeet, near the WI border where US 2 & US 45 intersect. It was the closest outfitter (maybe the only one) I could find in the U.P. with a kevlar canoe--ren...

Re: Cheap motels in Houghton?
Any feedback on the Super 8 a few blocks east of IR HQ? Looks like it could be a little quieter than many others which hug the main roads. I'm going in two weeks for one night (March, 2012). We stayed there in 2005 but nothing stands out in my memory. Checked my trip log and all I said was "Ni...
