Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2018 Edition
I only have $27 this year, so maybe a pair of Darn Toughs or trail meals. I'm happy with all my current gear.

Re: Rain pant recommendations
Probably not what you're looking for, but I love it. http://www.zpacks.com/accessories/cloudkilt.shtml I've seen those, and intrigued me if I did more straight backbacking. Unfortunately they don't work well sitting in a canoe--or for warmth when it's 40 something and the wind is blowing 20 somethi...

Re: Water shoes for lakes?
I bring water shoes to protect my feet from cuts and abrasions in rocky areas. My feet are my ticket to an enjoyable backpacking trip, and I like to keep them in good conditon. I also use the water shoes as a general purpose camp shoe, and give my barking dogs a rest from the hiking boots at the en...

Re: Water shoes for lakes?
I would wear the shoes not just for rocks but for the mussel shell's you'll find. Those can be pretty sharp and I would not want to get sliced by one. When I was at W Chickenbone I saw several broken shells.

Re: Favorite Campsites
Daisy Farm: Had a nice time in shelter 10.
Moskey: Shelter 3 or 7. #7 has a direct view out toward the sunset.
McCargoe: Shelter #7
Lane Cove: Tent only, but I enjoyed campsite #3.

Re: TR: 6/2-6/9 2017[DF-MCC-WCH-MB-DF-3M-RH]
Thanks for the report and letting us know about Lane Cove, I'm still debating on giving it a try, but the prospect of wet feet before I climb up that hill on my way out is feeling less and less appealing. Apparently it's not the entire boardwalk, but about 20 feet that's supposed to be "ankle deep....

Re: Travel Size Food, Spreads, Condiments
I just re-uped on alpineair for this summer. Yeah it's not the most tasty, but buying it at $4.50/meal helps my budget out. As long as I throw in a couple mountain house biscuits and gravy I'm a happy camper. The price is what led me to try them, but man I was so disappointed. I'd rather have a Pas...

Re: hiking/camping alone at Isle Royale for the first time
If you're going tomorrow there will be other hikers especially around Rock Harbor. The lodge and the store should be open, at least during the boat arrivals. I went Memorial Day last year and there were people with luggage who were staying at the lodge. None of the campsites was over-filled. You wil...

Re: Travel Size Food, Spreads, Condiments
Packit, I don't believe, has organic ingredients; and I don't see "bulk", available for their prepackaged meals? Whereas, MJ's has both available. :) Vegan and Vegetarian offerings are also available. I have never tried the Packit offerings, but, can attest to the favorable review of MJ's. I usuall...

Re: Chickenbone W. vs. Lake Ritchie
I think both are above average campgrounds with a slight edge to Lake Ritchie. For me, the deciding factor would hinge on how tired and hungry I was, how bad the bugs appeared and which camp sites were available; although a little later at your next stop will most likely not improve the odds at a b...

Re: Chickenbone W. vs. Lake Ritchie
I figured it'd be a "play by ear" situation. If I'm not missing out on something just completely magical, I'll keep my planned itinerary. Looks like I have to walk through Ritchie anyway to get to Moskey, so I'll be able to check it out and see if it's on the agenda for next year.
