Re: 800 MHz radios

I would seriously doubt it. They have access to systems designed and maintained through federal agencies in addition to the open marine bands in use.

I have a sincere appreciation of the solitude offered by The Island, especially while solo hiking or taking a break, hopefully sitting on a ridge. But I also very much share your enjoyment of talking with others. Besides being centrally located, offering many day trip options, this is what Daisy Far...

Re: What to do if you see a wolf.

Indeed, this is saddening. One or more of the transplanted wolves seem to have little to no fear of humans. A very recent video on the IR facebook group showed a person meeting one on a trail. The person stepped off but the wolf eventually kept going in their direction, fully aware of the person but...

Indeed Torpified, That's what hit my brain hardest, the new verb. Chief, that backlit scene could almost pass for a poorly done photoshop job, LOL. It DOES look cool though. I assume you'll keep us posted as to where you will publishing your works and maybe sneak us a peek or two. I can personally a...

Re: Saildrone on Great Lakes

It looks like they probably have radar. I wonder if they have vessel avoidance programming. It's not like you could hail one from your vessel to coordinate maneuvers.

Very interesting, had no idea. I see there is also as 72 foot version.

Makes me wonder what a boating encounter with one of these might be like.

Also, you can subscribe to one or more (or all) of the forum topical areas (and individual sub topics as well) and then receive an email when there's a new post. The email also includes a link that takes you directly to the new post. I find it quite convenient.

Re: Dining recommendations in Houghton?

If you have access to a fridge and microwave think about getting some breakfast pasties from Roy's (by the bridge in Houghton) then reheating them the next morning. But unless you are arriving earlier on Saturday they might sellout by the afternoon. Their "standard" pasties are very good ...

Re: Dining recommendations in Houghton?

Any good places for breakfast on the North side of the bridge? With an 8:00 flight I don’t want to take any chances of getting stuck on the wrong side of the canal. Suomi is good for breakfast but it is in Houghton (Suomi opens at 7am). In order to stick to the north side for breakfast I would norm...

Re: Charge your inReach Mini periodically

There are several factors that affect the life of rechargeable batteries, lithium ion included. One factor that rates very high up on the scale of things to avoid is to store them for any extended period of time without being substantially charged. But constantly "topping them off" can als...

That is pretty much the way a dockside clearing also looked at Daisy Farm in the 70's.... AND full of Daisies.

Re: Belle Isle

There is a natural arch on Amygdaloid Island. I'd have to look up the coordinates. You can do a quick search here because I know there is a old post discussing it. Is the grassy clearing still the same as this picture taken almost 20 years ago? It leads right up to a nice but rocky beach. BelleIsleC...

Re: IR first timer: trail and camping recommendations?

All very good advice thus far. For a beginner, the most common mistake is taking too much stuff; more specifically taking too much weight. My very first back packing experience was on Isle Royale with a borrowed pack and it weighed over 80 pounds!! It almost did me in. Actually it sort of did as I s...
