Rock of Ages lighthouse taken from the Voyager on its way to Grand Portage. It was so still that day, you could have paddled to Isle Royale on an air mattress.
Beautiful photo! Hopefully I can get the random-image header to come back so we can use this one.

Re: Greenstone Ridge Trail (Rockharbor to Windigo)

Have you considered other routes? The Greenstone is the most "famous" trail, but not my favorite. Also, all the campsites require a hike off the ridge and a hike back up in the morning. If you are coming into Windigo, look into the Feldman Loop. Just a suggestion. I'll second JerryB's idea. The Gre...

What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2017 Edition

Dividend season is right around the corner. Keep your eyes on your snail mail and email...notifications should be going out soon. So, what are you going to buy with your dividend and that sweet, sweet, sweet 20% off coupon? For me, I'll be either buying a new warm-weather bag, OR a camping quilt. De...

Re: 2017 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!

With the start of Tom's traditional thread, that means its officially time to start getting pumped for IR! No solid plans as of yet for us, but I'm putting this here as a place-holder, since I know the TIME FRAME we'll be heading out: Name: Richard Email: fonixmunkee(at)gmail.com Hometown: Superior,...

Re: Minong Ridge - good idea?

Nickybates92, welcome to the Isle Royale forums. Rest easy: while the Minong is the most strenuous and remote trail on the island, it's not like the backcountry of Yellowstone. The trails are clearly marked, and you have one great guide the entire time: Lake Superior. Most trails are easily identifi...

Re: TR: 9/28-10/6, 2016 [Paddling Malone Bay-Hay Bay-Siskiwit Bay]

Thanks for sharing your journal notes. I enjoyed reading them. I think it's so cool that you got to Isle Royale with your old man. It sounds like the weather cooperated with you trip, but the lake did not. It's funny how that goes sometimes. It's also nice you had a stroke of luck here and there, to...

This is good news. Let's hope it's the same situation. Thanks for following-up.

Re: Posting Photos

Yes, you need to use a hosting service, although you can also use the "attachment" function. We've made using a hosting service easier than the "attachments" option so the size of the forums doesn't grow and become unwieldy. Most of the common photo-hosting services are supported, but I would use Im...

Re: TR: Sept. 2016 [Hiking][McCargoe-Todd-Chickenbone-Richie-Moskey-Chippewa]

Mark, Your trip reports always are great. You have a lot of nerdy stats, which I enjoy, and your descriptions of things are always using words I haven't heard in a long time. Plus, said descriptions are so accurate that I can visualize exactly what you are speaking of. Did you find your tent you los...

Re: 1000 registered users

Thanks for the props, Mike. 1,000 active users is a big deal for the board. These are exciting times. A special thanks should go back to you, sir, for starting the whole concept of the forums so many years ago. When did you start them? 2000? And as Mike said, YES, thanks to the community here for ma...

That won't be your last honeymoon? That could be interpreted as romantic I suppose :-)

I'm glad you had a good trip and what an amazing place for you to have your honeymoon. We look forward to seeing more of you on the Forum!

Re: Advice sought: is my itinerary too conservative?

1) I'm bringing two 8-ounce canisters of fuel! I know I'll have lots left over, but the question again is: is my conservatism going too far here? Not at all. You'll be good to go with two 8oz canisters. As others have already said in the thread, it's better to have too much fuel than not enough (th...

Re: Coffee On The Isle

A friend of mine just came back from Korea and gave me some Korean coffee instant packs. It's a bit sweeter than I like (I'm already sweet enough), but it's damn tasty: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003VCULUS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=8YDX3W4RCKZV&coliid=I2S3P6J2ZMH5H0 Cheaper than ...

Re: Tree incident at Hatchet Lake

(wish I could grow a nice beard like his). I believe you saw Whitebeard. That's our group's name for him. We have made up many tall tales about him. It all started many years ago when we saw him happily hiking along the Minong ridge trail with a pack on, a chainsaw slung over his shoulder, and carr...

Re: Broken Leg Night Rescue

Scary stuff once more. I hope the individual is OK.

Lots of injuries on the island this year...let's all remember that Isle Royale is a wild place and that safety is paramount here (more so than at your neighborhood State Park).
