Awesome that it's coming to Duluth! I plan on going, anyone else? November 9th, at Weber Music Hall on the UMD campus.

Re: food help on first trip

Morning Steve, You've got a good itinerary going there...I like it. You'll be hitting some of my favorite spots on the island...including McCargoe and Daisy Farm. Regarding food, I find that Mountain House and some misc. snacks can satisfy two people just fine. We've actually been using the Backpack...

Re: Bag in August?

Whoops, guess I should read better. Then my answer after properly reading your question would be "don't just rely on your liner;" bring your entire bag.

Re: *Seven* Nights in August

Fonix, you actually caught a mileage mis-calculation on my first (posted) itinerary, between McCargo and Lane. I had mis-read the mileage chart. If you hadn't caught that, we would have had one helluva day for sure! Glad I could help, that's what the forum is here for, along with all the members. I...

Re: Bag in August?

As you mentioned, you want to be prepared. I'd venture a safe bet on being fine with a 35 degree bag without the liner, but if you have the room and don't mind the weight, there's no harm in bringing the liner. In my experience on IR, it's always coldest by the lake. If I recall your itinerary at th...

John is right, that is a dang good itinerary. You're also going to see some of the most beautiful spots on the island as well. You'll surely enjoy it :)

Re: A few miscellaneous questions.....

There are no lockers at Rock Harbor, but I think the store in RH will store bags/boxes for a small fee per day ($3/day). I know they do that at Windigo, and the same people own both stores...

Re: Water filtration

I as well always filter, both from Lake Superior and inland lakes. I use an Katadyn Vario, which is perfect for Isle Royale...it has two settings...one setting sends water through both the ceramic and paper/carbon filter, and the other setting sends it through only the paper/carbon filter. I use the...

Less Paul: I have an entire elevation profile available, I just have to get it from my friend's GPS. I'll get a hold of him before he heads out of town for a week and see if I can get it uploaded.

Re: Six Nights in August

mihiker, your plan seems very doable. McCargoe to Lane Cove will be your longest stretch, but once you get to the split for Daisy Farm on the Greenstone, the trek gets easy. Overall, it's not a "hard" trek, per se, but the trek back up onto the Greenstone from the Chickenbone basin is kind of a nigh...
