Re: First Time, Itinerary Posted, Solo Hike

The two that come to mind are the Baofeng and Wouxun radios. I'm looking at the Baofeng UV-5R V2+ ($39.99) or the BF-F9 V2+ ($59.99). They have Rx only coverage of 65 - 108 MHz (broadcast FM) as well as Rx/Tx on 136 - 174 and 400 - 520 MHz, weigh 214 grams (not sure if that includes the battery or ...

That sounds like a Backpacker Magazine article just waiting to be written.

Re: Fishing at McCargo Cove

I believe any Lake Superior waters require a MI license, regardless of Moskey or McCargo designation. There are also special regulations regarding fishing Superior waters and then fishing inland lakes because of spiny water fleas. https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/fishing.htm Desor is void of f...

Re: Trip suggestions for end of September.

Another vote for the Feldtmann Loop, with a side trip to Rainbow Cove for a sunset. Thanks for the suggestion. Im going to look into this Rainbow Cove, sounds very nice. You're welcome. It's just a little spur trail from Feldtmann Lake. Flat and a quick hike without a pack. http://i1097.photobucket...

Re: Comfort Items

Fresh food and a coleman stove to go with the tarp, pillow, cigars, slippers and camp chair. With just the 1/4+ mile hump to Washington Creek, I'd be eating like a wilderness king.

I could see a small backpack cooler for frozen steaks, brats, burgers, etc... in your future.

Sounds like you'll be physically ready for the trip. You'll love it.

Your SOTA and NPOTA references are pretty intriguing. Any info on the equipment you'll be using?

Re: "Planet friendly Gear"

Good old ALICE packs still get used every once in a in awhile, when we feel nostalgic. I'm personally a big fan of going lighter these days, but would never recommend that someone not go get their feet wet due to old or heavy equipment.

Re: Novice Backpacker in search of a Solid Meal Plan:-)

Like a lot of the others, I do oatmeal and dried fruit for breakfast with Via coffee. When the boy is with me, he likes potatoes and sausage in a tortilla. Lunch is either a clif bar type item or summer sausage & cheese. Really something that doesn't require any prep or cleanup is all I'm after....

I've got the bug for Wabakimi too. I don't think my paddling skills will safely allow it though.

Lots of new gear for 2016. New gear is always exciting. I've been eyeing up the Therm-a-rest Treo chair for a while now, and think that a 20% off coupon will help seal the sale: https://www.rei.com/product/898531/therm-a-rest-treo-chair fonix, might I suggest an alternative? https://www.rei.com/pro...

I have no idea what to spend mine on, but it's only $5.46. Everything I bought last year was on clearance, except for the Allite chair I picked.

If fires are allowed, I carry a fixed blade for batoning wood. If no fires, I just carry a little benchmade folder. Mini Griptilian.
