What are the aspects of the portage that would make it miserable?

Re: Portaging from Tobin to 3 Mile

Have you considered crossing over at Suzy's Cave? The portage length would be much shorter, although I doubt the trail head is marked for a portage.

Fonix,

I'd very much like to see a copy of that Todd Harbor photo?

Re: Malone Bay vs. Todd Harbor

Welcome to the forums, Donk. I will come clean up front that Todd Harbor is my favorite campground. I'm a bit unusual in that regard as there are a few other campgrounds that generally top people's list. I am partial to campgrounds on Lake Superior and also love sunsets. TH provides the best of both...

Ditto on that. My coldest shelter memory was at Chippewa Harbor in late September. It started with a boiling pot containing 2 quarts of water sitting next to my head when I went to sleep. When I awoke it was frozen solid.

Re: Planning our first visit

Welcome Dave (frdm02), While your planned itinerary is not too difficult, you have several options available should anyone decide it is becoming too difficult to "press on". The eastern end of the island has enough camp grounds that rearranging your itinerary on a day to day basis can be d...

Re: Why so many return trips?

One expedition I was going to undertake many years ago was to travel cross country from Chippewa Harbor CG to Malone Bay CG. For me the motivation was to get from one dead end campground to another dead end campground while short cutting the 26 mile trail mileage to about 7.5 miles as the crow flies...

Re: Budget Watchdog Senator Could Use Some Education

I think a lot of people would agree that the NPS mis-manages funds. I, for one, do. But they also provide a valuable service... while myself and others who think the NPS is wasteful and couldn't manage itself out of as paper bag, they also provide and protect our greatest national treasures. I've l...

Re: Budget Watchdog Senator Could Use Some Education

Here is some budget trivia and probably way too much information. No politics, just facts. 2013 NPS Budget (Greenbook) http://www.nps.gov/aboutus/upload/FY13_NPS_Greenbook.pdf The total budget for the NPS is about $3 billion. From this data I extracted spreadsheets for: 1) the budgets per property (...

Budget Watchdog Senator Could Use Some Education

Isle Royale (and Keweenaw National Historic Park) are in the news today regarding budget watchdog concerns. Hopefully we can help out the Senator from Oklahoma without getting too political here. http://www.freep.com/article/20131030/NEWS06/310300024/Senator-targets-2-Michigan-parks-among-most-waste...

Re: 3yr old hiking?

Welcome to the forum here. You didn’t supply any information about your son’s size and maturity and size of the party. That could make a big difference. Let me start out by saying I think you could arrange a plan that would suit a 3 year old where both of you would have a great time but I think you ...

The video provided an excellent "ride along" with you to Tookers Island. What was the water temperature in Rock Harbor?

Re: Lake Trout for Dummies?

Anything below 52 degrees F is usually considered cold enough for Lakers. Indeed, a steel leader should be used. If jigging, find the bottom off a reef and try jigging off the bottom or anywhere from 5 to 15 feet off the bottom.
