Re: Yellowstone Cell Connectivity
that is crazy... I go into the woods and all these parks to get away from the "civilized" world that sucks the life out of you everyday. They denied the new tower at Voyageurs they should deny this also!

Re: Visitor perception of "private" areas on Isle Royale?
I wonder if they go into a store and demand to go in the back room to shop... You don't intrude on someone elses campsite uninvited, why would you demand to park at their dock. Yes sail boats have the right of way under sail and only when under sail and on a true course they cannot turn into your pa...

If we are talking boots I am a huge fan of Timberland, I finally wore out my first pair after 5 years of daily wear. Went to the timberland store and they actually still made the same boot... I bought 2, now 7 years later I have started wearing the third pair... I just hope they are still making the...

Re: Planning trip for next summer
Plan on a tent... even if everywhere you are staying has a shelter you cant be sure to not have somenone beat you there.
As someone has already mentioned Jim DuFrense's book and or Mike's book http://www.isleroyale.info/ are great resources for planning.

Re: HELP! Upcoming Trip
my tip... pack light, and when you think you have packed light enough take half your stuff and leave it home. The most common mistake for new backpackers is bringing too much junk. I also recommend going on a training trip or two even if it is your back yard. If you dont use it there you dont need i...

Re: Your 2cents on these plans
I'll go the other way here... and say I don't think it would be too bad going from Windigo to S Desor. In June we did Windigo to Siskiwit with a couple that we met on arrival (hiked with them to make sure they would make it). That was ~12 miles going at a snails pase (i would have liked to go a bit ...

Re: First IR Trip - solo itinerary help
Since you are looking for photos I recommend getting up early on day 2 so you can get to the tower early... the light will be better for pictures. Mid day at a high point makes everything look flat in pictures.

Re: Trekking Poles
I'll throw in my two cents... Trekking poles help uphill and are a lifesaver down hill. I also find them very usefull when doing stream crossings, mud pits, ect. and you have something to poke at the mud to see how deep it is before you step into a knee deep mud hole. I also use them as tent poles w...

Re: Help with a short trip - Isle Royale Newbie
3 nights can easily be done. night one at Feldtmann, night two at Siskiwit, night three at island mine or Windigo. It is a 6 mile walk from Island mine to Windigo but as Ed pointed out it is all down hill and very easy. It would be very easy to get there before the 1pm departure of either the sea hu...
