Re: VII to delay start of season

This has been a near record winter for Lake Superior ice. It has to go somewhere before smaller craft can risk collisions. The snow on the ground is also still at very high levels. Even after last week's warm spell there is still 49 inches on the ground in the Keweenaw (down from a season high of 55...

Re: Gps recomendations

gps or compass for that matter on a smart phone won't work without a cell signal to ping off of for location making them worthless in a wilderness situation. Indeed, many or even most smart phone mapping apps are useless without a cell connection (or more exactly, an internet connection). I would n...

Re: Mid-May Trip

I did some calculations based on Keweenaw snowfall records: http://www.imagecoast.com/images/97v388/keweenawsnowfall_1.jpg Keweenaw Snowfall Data http://keweenawcountyonline.org/snowfall.php If the remainder of this year is the same as last year (91 inches) then the all time record of 355 inches in ...

Re: Mid-May Trip

The likelihood of snow along the Greenstone Ridge in May is very minimal, but if the Spring is anything like last year I doubt you could get to the Ridge, at least not without snow shoes as the snow remains longer in the lower more covered areas. Last year was VERY unusual due a huge amount of snowf...

Inside the Ranger III

I ran across these interesting interactive panoramas of the Ranger III:

Note: This link has been broken. It might get repaired so I kept it up.

Fantastic video. Great botanical and wildlife photography and video. One tiny correction. Your shot across Rock Harbor from Daisy Farm is of the Edisen Fishery. The Bangsund cabin is 1/2 mile farther west and nearly invisible from Daisy Farm, hidden behind much foliage. Anyway, I just loved the vide...

Re: Random question

Mike T. was thinking about doing it. Not sure if he ever made it there or not. There is a thread at the top of the next page discussing it. http://isleroyaleforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1952 I have seen photos from other paddlers that have made the trip. Unless you are really into open sea kay...

Re: Lake Superior frozen: Anyone walking to Isle Royale? :)

. . . . one or more wolves could leave the island. My earlier thought as well. Hard to think like a wolf but their perspective and motivations could easily be 180 degrees opposite ours. Here's the NOAA perspective on the ice situation. http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/glcfs-ice.php?lake=s&ty...

Wolf-Moose Project Fund Raising - Special Opportunity

. . This morning I recieved this email from Leah Vucetich. Dear Friends, A generous donor has pledged to contribute $60,000 in 2014 if we are able to raise an additional $60,000 from private, non-governmental sources in 2014. This donor has also pledged to contribute $60,000 in 2015 if we are able t...
