Re: Three Litters of Wolves born on IR

From TV6 in Marquette, same subject, but watch the video. Shows a moose being chased by a wolf.

Three Litters of Wolves born on IR

Apparently, there were more wolves born on IR than previously thought. The researchers have now confirmed three litters. https://www.uppermichiganssource.com/2021/09/08/new-wolf-pups-confirmed-isle-royale-sightings-among-visitors-rise/?fbclid=IwAR2sHuYqtoYNQiavB1_G8dyYUvRg-TVkZM0T3l4IIzh3mul3FX6CNFq...

Re: Horne Fire

Amazing pics! Thanks for sharing. That's quite the view of Monument Rock. And I stayed at that Duncan Bay shelter many years back.

Re: Horne Fire

The Park Service does have a (absolutely huge) fire plan, that documents on how they approach fire. I need to review it, but pretty much they recognize that fire is part of the boreal forest ecosystem, and they'll let it burn, within reason (protecting structures, etc.).

Re: Horne Fire

Funny, almost, that the only contained part of the fire is Lake Superior. And notice the fire break along the Tobin Harbor/Duncan Bay portage. It seems that's as far west as the Park Service will allow the fire to burn. Interesting that there are no fire breaks on the east side of the fire.

Re: Horne Fire

This is for Grand Marais, but the NWS forecast calls for 1-2 inches of rain on Saturday night. Hope it happens.

Re: Horne Fire

One good rain will change things considerably. Looking at the NWS forecast for Grand Marais, a real good chance of substantial rain today through Saturday. We'll see if it happens.

Re: Horne Fire

Kind of wonder how much of the fire burned in the crowns of the trees, and how much was in the understory, burning surface litter. Both can produce a lot of smoke. Once the fire is out, I look forward to seeing pics of the burn. I suspect trails will be closed for the remainder of the season, the Pa...

Re: swimming

is there any place on Isle Royale that folks go cliff jumping? Depends on what you mean by a cliff. If you have a kayak or canoe, there are some 15' tall (?) rock ledges in the narrows section of Chippewa Harbor. I was too chicken, but my paddle buddy spent about an hour diving off these. He did ba...

Re: Horne Fire

In case people haven't seen this pic. To me, not as bad as all the smoke suggested.
