Re: NPS to allow guns in National Parks

Wow, I just read the entire federal regulation hoping to find exceptions for parks like IR and found none. I predict we will see a wolf shot by some paniced pistol packing hiker within a couple of years. This is nuts. I'm going to check MI's CCW law to see if there are any limitations to carrying in...

Re: 2009 Trips

I hope to catch the first boat again this year. I have one elusive goal to achieve and everytime I try to do it, something has happened. I've hiked every trail on IR except the section between West Chickenbone and Ishpeming Tower. In 2003, I blew out my knee on the Greenstone 4 miles east of East Ch...

Re: First-timer planning for next summer

I like what srparr says. I even concur with JohnH which, if you read much of this forum, you will find very unusual, but that is another story. :) The Huginun Cove loop is a grea way to tune up for the other trip. I agree that goig to South Desor is better than Island Mine. Depending on when you cam...

Re: Seperate Great Lakes from the Mississippi

Speaking of invasive species, has there been any consideration of separating JohnH from Lake Superior? He's worse than one of those jumping catfish. (I'm working on my 50 messages so I can move up from Newbie Cake).

Re: Wolves vs Moose Showdown

With respect to the bear spray, it is my understanding the Rolf Peterson began carrying bear spray a while back. His feeling was that, if there was an encounter, the wolf would immediately equate humans with discomfort. That is not be mean that we should go about willy-nilly with bear spray and use ...

Re: Spring Early Summer 2009

You should be fine in the late spring. VII usually runs by the end of the first week in May (once they get their permit from NPS). I've been able to catch them at the dock and see if they have room and have been very lucky. Your best bet would be to book the rides in advance, though.

Re: Chippewa Harbor via Lake Superior by canoe

I agree with JohnH (it's rare, but sometimes he does have something of value to say :D ). The water in May is bitter cold. Going into Superior at 38 degrees, you'll be fatally hypothermic in a couple of minutes. The only thing that the extra buoyant vests will do is make it easier to locate the body...

Nick, was the overexposed lake effect intentional, or did it just come out that way? I love it![/quote]
No, that was just the way it turned out. I'm a point and shoot kind of guy and sometimes I get lucky.

Phase 10 is the best. It works for 2 to 6 players and anyone can join in. It is "idiot proof" and easy to learn, except for may JohnH who could not grasp the concept of draw, lay down, discard the entire week we played it. The best part is when your kid is on a 12 day long losing streak. G...

Pentax Optio 30

I got this one for Christmas. I have a Cannon Rebel with all the bells and whistles that I carry in a deck box when I paddle and on a Kuban Hitch when I hike, but I wanted something I could put on my PFD for quick shots without worrying about whether I got it wet (I burned out the body of the Cannon...

Leave the Cell at Home

OK, I'll admit up front that I'm an old curmudgeon. That said, one of the reasons many of us go to IR is to escape some of the realities of life. I've been in campsites where I've had to listen to someone on a satellite phone discussing things that could well have been left to the user's return. I g...
