Re: Nemo Hornet vs. Big Agnes Fly Creek

I have had good luck with Big Agnes. I have a Copper Spur 2 now and, in very limited use so far, I love the two doors and vestibules. (I do find that the vestibules make me lazy and disorganized, but that is my problem.) I think it may be more expensive than the Fly Creek, but look for sales. To go ...

Re: Feldtmann Lake Loop to Huginnin Cove (Advice Needed)

Day 3 is a long hike, but it is certainly doable. Siskiwit to Island Mine is uphill (as is almost any hike from the shore to the middle of the island) but fairly brief. The Greenstone section of the hike is slightly downhill--a walk in the woods. There is a small creek at Island Mine and you can ref...

Re: Greenstone Ridge Trail (Rockharbor to Windigo)

If you are coming into RH, Feldtman Loop will not be ideal; it is on the other side of the island. (It is a far easier trail and easier to follow, than the Minong.) Given your time constraints, you should focus on the East end. Consider lane Cove, Daisy and RH (can skip Daisy, if you only have two n...

Re: Greenstone Ridge Trail (Rockharbor to Windigo)

You should have no problems. All trail junctions are marked by a post. There are parts of the island where rock cairns are placed to help out on rocky outcroppings. Not really needed on the Greenstone. Have you considered other routes? The Greenstone is the most "famous" trail, but not my ...

Re: Itinerary Feedback Request - Late June 2017 Trip

Welcome! Target your preferred campsites. I suggest McCargo, Chippewa, Moskey, and Todd. Another thought--If you start at Lane Cove, take a water taxi to Hidden lake and hike from there. Not sure of the distance but I think it is comparable and it will lessen backtracking. You are also smart to cons...

Re: feedback on early season, dead-end themed hike?

I love going to the island in May--no bugs and cool hiking weather. Be prepared for cold nights, maybe very cold; you never know. Also, vistas may be nicer before full leaf out. Have you considered adding McCargo to your trip--direct hike to and from Todd. It will give you an easy taste of the Minon...

Re: Itinerary Advice for thesneakymonkey

Every point you raise is a valid one--you are on the right track. A few more thoughts: You may not be able to make a taxi reservation until the lodge opens. Someone else may be able to confirm this. Good point on the mileage. I suspect the mileage from Hidden Lake is easier than the overland route. ...

Re: Itinerary Advice for thesneakymonkey

You should book the water taxi through th lodge at Rock Harbor. Do it in advance for the time when the ferry comes in, plus 15-30 minutes. It will take you right to the Hidden Lake dock and there is a trail up to the beginning (or end) of the Greenstone Trail. One warning, the lodge/taxi folks are n...

Re: Possible Itinerary and Dates - Feedback?

You have another option to the sea plane, but it involves a good deal more driving for you. If you came to IR from Minnesota, the ferry ride, especially on the Sea Hunter, is much shorter. If you do that, you have quite a few options for hikes. It may not be worth the extra driving for you.

Re: Possible Itinerary and Dates - Feedback?

Welcome! A few thoughts for you. I know some minimalists may disagree, but I cannot imagine a trip like yours in running shoes. The trails are intermittently rocky and root-filled, but seldom flat and smooth. I would also suggest you plan for a layover day--it will add to your flexibility, allow you...

Re: Camping

I spent two nights in Lane Cove early in the season a couple of years ago. Tightlines is right about the limited campsites and increasing numbers of hikers (relatively speaking, of course). One night I had it to myself and another, it was full. It is beautiful and hike out is not as bad as one would...

Re: Minong Ridge - good idea?

The Minong is great, but so are many other hikes on the island. Ask your dad if has been to McCargo, Moskey and Chippewa, for example. Or maybe a hike to Malone and a pick up there. The Feldtman Loop gives a great taste of many aspects of the island.
