Re: Early Season transport
I took the early boat last year. It is just a ride. no food, no drink. You do have to have a boat. the Ranger stops at Mott and you get off.

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2020 edition
I was just there today with a $50 gift cert, but couldn't find anything worth buying. I should have a big dividend this year. I finally finished routing all my bills through the card.

Re: 1 person tent (from REI topic)
I bought the Big Agnes Fly Creek HV UL2 two years ago. Although it is a two person tent it weighs less than the tiger wall, but like you said, mo side entrance. I drop my poncho at the door and crawl in and out. no fuss no muss. and I love spreading out my gear.

Re: June 2020 First timers w/kids Itinerary review
Having two days at RH you (or just the older kids) might want to loop out to Suzy's cave on the Tobin harbor trail and back on the Rock Harbor trail. It's a nice no pack stroll and the two trails are very different. When you get into RH check to see what the rangers will be giving presentations on a...

Re: Itinerary suggestions
Welcome to the forums. I see no problem with your trip, but offer an option anyway. Five days will open up a a lot more of the island than four if you can do it, but for four days: Friday: I usually take the Ranger, dock around three and easily get to Daisy in 3.5-4 hours. Your trip to Daisy the fir...

Re: Will I need a sleeping bag liner?
I am a (very) cold sleeper also. I still have my 0 degree bag in early June and switch to a 20 degree in late June. I really don't like to be cold. I carry my dry suit insulation (effectively snug fitting sweats) until mid June. These are my camp clothes and sleeping clothes. I also have a silk line...

Has anyone tried dehydrating Campbell chunky soups? I have limited experience with my dehydrator.

Re: What Food Is Best?
To lighten the load: I usually plan my trip so that I get back to Rock Harbor mid day the day before I leave. I am able to lighten my load by 3 meals because I eat a burger for lunch at the bar, have dinner and breakfast at the restaurant. The store has chips, dip, meat bread, ice cream, beer, wine ...

Like Ingo says, it's not worth spending money on anything else to save ounces, unless you go on a diet to drop pounds (as my triathlete friend says about bicycles). If you really want to spend money or have a backup, I love my sawyer squeeze https://www.rei.com/product/103050/sawyer-squeeze-water-fi...

Re: What Food Is Best?
When I started hiking I ate oatmeal, ramen and Lipton side dish packs. I still have some of that in my pack, but I really like the taste of Mountain House chicken and beef stews so those are typically dinner. I carry extra tea, some "squirt in water" drinks and a hand full of the herb-ox i...

Re: June 2020 Itinerary Review
I don't think you will have any problem with any of your itineraries, you just might be quite a bit more tired with a pack vs without. I have done a few end to end trips, but for some reason I usually go from Windigo to Rock. I think I like the bar and restaurant at the end of my trip. I do have som...

Re: McCargoe Cove to Chickenbone Lake portage
I was there this past spring and a beaver dam was 20' downstream of the put in at the top. I couldn't paddle much past the dock, only 100 feet or so.

Re: Solo Hike
The only ways to resupply is to send packages to yourself via https://www.isleroyaleboats.com/home.html or to drop packages at the Rock Harbor Lodge. both have costs, but Isle Royale Boats will drop a package ant any of their stops. You have to be there to collect it, charges apply. I spent 18 days ...

Re: Best stove for new backpacker
I have a couple of alcohol stoves, but I don't find them very convenient. I tend to stay out for a while and like hot meals. The weight of the fuel offsets the weight (or lack there of) of the stove.
