Dayhikes near Hwy 61?
North of Duluth, Hwy 61 looks to be teeming with parks. Any recommendations about where to stop for a quick (< 2 hr) walk on the drive up to Grand Portage?

Re: First Time, Itinerary Posted, Solo Hike
by my lights, it's even more impressive that it's duck pin, even if it's lighter than our native midwestern bowling balls. Novelty counts!

Re: elementary juneberry question
Thanks berry much! I'm looking at a June visit --- hence my excitement at the nomenclature---so I guess I'll have to plan another trip for prime berry season.

elementary juneberry question
When do juneberries come into season on IR? Would they be a rash fruit for a novice forager to forage? (I mean: are they readily distinguishable from berries one oughtn't eat??)
If these get answered, I have learned followup questions about Grant's tomb.

Re: First Time, Itinerary Posted, Solo Hike
Mark, It looks like I'll miss you by a few days -- I'll also be on my first trip, in theory from Windigo to Rock Harbor -- but I want to register my admiration for your goals and your training regimen. A bowling ball AND a medicine ball! (Where do you even find a medicine ball??) My meager counterpa...

Re: 2016 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!
I'm a walking fool who's lived in MI for the last 8 yrs, but this is my first trip. I'm super-excited (except about the tapeworms)! Name: Laura Email: ruetsche@umich.edu Hometown: Ann Arbor, MI Arrival Date: June 20 Departure Date: June 23 Coming From/Via: Grand Portage/Voyageur II Itinerary: 6/20: ...

Re: Novice Backpacker in search of a Solid Meal Plan:-)
Cooking in the bag: I enthusiastically second the Hawk Vittles recommendation---it tastes like real food, and the portions are relatively generous. I also like the Good-to-Go Thai Curry (available at REI) a lot. All of the above take some time to reconstitute, so it's worth bringing a cozy for the b...

Re: water taxi *from* Hidden Lake dock?
My list of paranoias is long, with blackflies, tapeworms, and leeches outranking dock abandonment! Thanks.

water taxi *from* Hidden Lake dock?
Today's rookie questions are about the logistics of arranging a water taxi ride from Hidden Lake Dock to Rock Harbor. (I'm looking at a Wednesday, so the sight seeing tour won't be an option.) 1. Paranoia: I'm picturing myself sitting forlornly on the dock waiting for a taxi that can't make the arra...

Re: Isle Royale Rookie questions, GRT
Thanks, all, for the quick and helpful replies. I hadn't appreciated that "back-country" camping engaged additional sets of regulations --- I'll definitely plan to stick with the providentially-spaced established campgrounds!

Isle Royale Rookie questions, GRT
My plan, to first approximation: to visit mid-June, and follow the Greenstone Ridge Trail* from Windigo to Rock Harbor. Toward fine-tuning the itinerary, I'm after some general background information. 1. Water: Beyond the official camp grounds, are there places along/near the GRT where water is like...
