Re: Pack: Size and Weight Recommendations for 4-6 days on IR
I have an Aether 70L that was plenty big enough for a planned 9 day stay on the isle. Note that there are lighter packs on the market, but Osprey makes a good comfortable pack, so yes 65L should work fine for your trip.

Re: First Time to the East Side
How and what time are you planning to arrive at Rock Harbor? 11 miles with a late(ish) start on day 1 can make for a long day. the section between Daisy and Moskey has been hot and trying on both of my trips: interior with a lot of exposed stone soaking up the heat of the sun. You know what the terr...

Re: Isle Royale First Timers
That's a nice route and doable. Pack a little extra water at LC for the hike to Chickenbone. Also, get an early start from Daisy for RH, especially if you plan to hike the Rock Harbor trail all the way instead of diverting to the easier Tobin Harbor trail.

Great report. I love the photos, especially Siski and Rainbow; it shows me what I missed when I had to shorten my trip. Thanks for posting.

Re: Visitor perception of "private" areas on Isle Royale?
Wow! ... being limited to where I can walk once I arrive on the island, I didn't know anything about Fishermen's home. However, I would consider such intrusion the same as hanging out on the lodge's front porch while in Rock Harbor or wandering around the employee residence area at either RH or Wind...

Re: 8/16 - 8/22 2014 Rock Harbor to Windigo
Gimp, that's a great fix. Luckily, we didn't reach that point in boot failure. However, I was focused on using tape or glue and I'm not sure I would have thought of parachord, which I had some of. The boots are very repairable still. What really irritated me, was the fact that the boots were newly p...

Re: Houghton hotel
Can't really say about the motel, but your idea for having a beverage at keweenaw brewing sounds like an excellent idea. After partaking in one (Widow Maker) in Windigo, it has become my favorite brew.

Churchill, I was glad to see you getting off the plane. I wasn't sure if you had came from Houghton or Rock Harbor... it wouldn't have been a bad thing to hang out for a couple of extra days, but having my planned hike altered due to circumstances, I was ready to leave.

Re: 8/16 - 8/22 2014 Rock Harbor to Windigo
Ingo, my son loves backpacking. He actually was the reason I jumped into it, hiking 2 nights at Pictured Rocks when he was 13 with the scouts using a couple of old external backpacks I purchased from a co-worker for a few bucks, an cheap tent that didn't have a proper rainfly and wearing bluejeans a...

Re: Planning trip for next summer
Later in August usually avoids most of the bugs and still moderate temps. That being said, be prepared for temps dipping into the high 30s at night. My first night last week, the temp dropped down into the 40s at night. Some experienced hikers find the constant up and down is just as taxing as hikin...

8/16 - 8/22 2014 Rock Harbor to Windigo
8/16-8/22 2014 Rock Harbor to Windigo: My second time on the isle and I have to say she showed me her other face with little sunshine and plenty of fog/mist/low hanging clouds… Still, a great trip. My 15 yo. son and I flew over to Rock Harbor Friday, August 16. I was duly impressed with the service;...

Re: Trekking Poles
they saved me plenty of times this last trip with the wet rock conditions...ended up breaking one, but still worth the price. I did however find my pace was quicker without a trekking pole in hand when trail conditions didn't require them.
