GORP

What goes in your GORP?

1# mixed nuts
1# spanish peanuts
soynuts
craisins
mini M&M's
sesame sticks

I am all for keeping it simple. I used to put either carob chips, or peanut butter chips but they get mooshy after a while.

Re: Best lunch ideas

My alltime favorite is PB&J on hearty sourdough with some sort of side (goldfish ect.) and a flavored drink (Gatorade ect) Cheese and crackers would be next. On a crappy weather day, we have resorted to spoonfuls of peanut butter when we didn't want to have the full blown lunch stop. Usually han...

Re: Portaging kayaks

johnhens, that yoke may be worth a try, nice job making it! the drawback is you have to stow it somewhere, as canoe yokes are usually built into the boat. . The blocks were throughbolted, I was able to twist them tight enough on the thwart so that they didn't move. The yoke sat under the webbing on...

Re: kayaking from rock harbor to chippewa harbor

A few years ago I analyzed wind data from Passage Island and Rock of Ages lights and came up with the following generalization for the months of July & August: 50% of the time winds are from the SW quadrant (180-270 degs). 25% of the time winds are from the NE quadrant (0-90 degs). Leaving 25% ...

Re: Portaging kayaks

I made a portage yoke for my kayaks. I took a canoe portage yoke and put padded blocks on it and used a tie down strap to hold the yoke on the cockpit comming. It made portaging much easier. Make sure you get the yoke adjusted (which I had not done) so the kayak can be balanced. http://inlinethumb33...

Re: kayaking from rock harbor to chippewa harbor

Alot of it depends on your skill/experience level. Figure the prevaling summer winds are S/Sw/W/NW. If you go from Chippewa to Rock, you will have waves either following, quartering or on the beam. The winds will help push you along. If you go the other way, you will be going into the wind and waves...

Re: June 2010 First Trip

Love site 2, my favorite tent site on the Island. Cool that you caught a pike on the fly, I have been trying for a few years.
What did you use for a leader? Color streamer and how big?

Thanks for sharing the experience!!

Re: A First Boat Experience!

Tom,
Thanks for taking the time to write a good TR!!
The pics are great.
For all the folks going there, not too many TR's, kind of disappointing.
Sounds like you had a great trip. How many of the survey markers do you have?

I have been using a Marmot Precip for a number of years, it works fine for the price.

Re: Spray Skirts

Brian,
Make sure the size of the spray skirt fits your cockpit size and waist size. I prefer a neoprene deck as it will be better going through surf as far as not collapsing if you have breaking waves.
