Re: Fire rings and fire wood.
Most spots, the rings, are shared communal; a few have elevated grills to use. There is no designated supply of wood, unless some from previous fires had leftovers. There, also, isn't a lot of down stuff to gather. Most of it they, prefer to, let the forest re-cycle. This place isn't a "car cam...

Re: Any Food Drop Experience?
I would add to my previous post; I always have just mailed my drop to the Isle, the day I leave from home in lower MI.
It has more than enough time to meet me in Windigo, when I'm hiking thru RH.

Re: Stove Fuel
HexFletch may have changed plans; to fly into RH and hike opposite of original plan.
Problem solved, if that is the case, as RH will have the canisters, or Coleman, or whatever.
Perhaps she will return to the forum prior to departure, to let all concerned know.

Re: Any Food Drop Experience?
I have had food drops the past two years at Windigo; it was just as easy, as you are hoping for. I always use the largest Priority Mail box for my mailing(in the $15-$20 range). Mail to: Isle Royale National Park Windigo Ranger Station C/O Post-mistress Mary Grand Portage, MN 55605 On the box, in se...

Re: Pictured Rocks!
Picture Rocks is a great place to base camp and do day hikes; first time there last week, but it won't be the last.

Re: Pictured Rocks!
So, I'm bringing this thread back to life. Any one have ideas for shuttle services in the area, other than the "Altran" transportation services? To me they seem, not all that accommodating to early season hikers. I am leaving tomorrow for the "Rocks", but only know of this compan...

Re: Food ideas needed
Do all of the above mention methods you have available. Smoke some cuts of beef or venison for jerky, dehydrate leftovers from regular meals, store them all in your freezer after vacuum sealing them. I have dehydrated leftovers, and vacuum sealed them. They keep long enough on the trail, after being...

Re: Trails could be tough in Spring
I don't ever recall the sound of chainsaws; I did see handsaws in use for trail blockers, ie. shrubs and blow downs. I always hiked in Aug-Sept, never at a park opening time frame; I would think it most likely, that they would use chainsaws for the winter blow downs, and early season clean-up, just ...

Re: July at Windigo
There are limits to length of stay at each camp as I recall. During that July period, I don't believe one can stay at Windigo for a week, without moving to other camps every other day. Others here may know the exact times of stay permitted, but off hand, I recall the limit may only be two days at Wi...

Re: Semi-Experienced Backpackers, Itinerary Help
Just one comment to add to the wonderful suggestions you have already received. Never rule out the weather in any of your plans. Whether it is the "flights", to and from the Isle, or on the Isle. The weather - "The Lady" - controls ones' itinerary. Enjoy the trip, be flexible, yo...

Re: Inexpensive and Good Gear??
Well, if you make your own gear, try reading Ray Jardines' "Beyond Backpacking". In the last section of the book is a do-it yourself chapter. Make your own tarp, pack, quilt, stuff sacks, gravity filter, etc. All of his gear has the "keep it light and cheap" mentality. His ideas/...
