Re: Gaiters?

It's been situational for me. I've always taken them when hiking in coastal Washington or Oregon (it's always rainy), but seldom needed them at Isle Royale. Unless it is really rainy, I'm on the Minong Trail, or I'm bushwacking, they tend to just take up space in my pack. Good quality, well broken-i...

Re: Unfounded Safety Concerns

Then why refer to it as the "Islands Facebook page" from the start? That is false. It seems to ridicule people with specific questions, intentionally obfuscate any intended argument being made, and avoids the fact that there is a legitimate source for information. If it were to simply ref...

Re: Unfounded Safety Concerns

You must be looking at a fake Isle Royale Facebook business page or a private Isle Royale Facebook group page. There is nothing like what you describe on the official National Park Service Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Isle-Royale-National-Park-127161610664143/. The NPS Facebook page is wel...

https://www.amazon.com/Reynolds-Wrap-Heavy-Duty-Non-Stick/dp/B008VUCNSS I was skeptical when this first came out, but now I fold and pack some of it for every trip, particularly if I am hoping for fish or have something I need semi-steamed. Seal fish steaks, lemon-pepper spice and olive oil in the w...

Re: Ambitious Trip Advice

The Feldtmann loop is a wonderful hike, but on your first day with a fully loaded pack your plan makes for long day. Note that from Feldtmann Lake to the top of the ridge the trail is uphill, not a flat walk. You also have to carry all the water you need for that 10 mile stretch.

Re: First time back country camper. What to bring to Isle Royale?

Just curious: what clothing items are you packing, and what type of pack? In addition to the possibility of rain, temperatures by early September can vary wildly. While I try to keep weight down, at that time of year the least I bring is lightweight fleece gloves and a similar hat, along with a seco...

Re: Travel Size Food, Spreads, Condiments

I've never had an issue with getting the dregs out of a squeeze tube: opening the bottom and sweeping it with a spork or even just twirling through it with a rolled tortilla does the trick. I'm not sure what I would use mustard or ketchup for on a long trip, but I store spices, syrup, Tabasco, red w...

As a make your own, I've found these indispensable: https://www.rei.com/product/696007/coghlans-squeeze-tubes-package-of-2. I fill one with PB and the other with Nutella, and place in a zip lock bag with tortillas and a small bottle of honey (or mix in the same tube). These are always packed in a si...

Re: Campground in Grand Portage

While we typically stay at one of the area hotels before and after a trip, the Grand Marais municipal campground is actually pretty nice. Note that you can also pay just to use the showers there after a trip to the BWCA or Isle Royale. From personal experience, do not count on any Verizon service on...

It's humbling to know that people freely give the most important of possessions in life, their time and knowledge, to the betterment and stewardship of our collective cultural and natural resources. Thank you for your volunteer service.
