there is access to water ...you still have to filter boil and/or treat it. In many cases the source is lake superior or an inland lake thesneakymonkey, I am glad that you pointed this out! I was afraid that the original poster thought that there was water "on tap" at all the campgrounds. ...

As for water, I planned to refill at the campgrounds. Is it accurate that all campgrounds offer water?

Re: TR: Waterloo-Pinckney Trail

Nice trip log, thanks! My eye's been on the trail and especially that yurt (I'm a sucker for those, especially in the Porcupine Mountains). I've never visited the area yet. It sounds like that might be a good spring trip. Careful there in mid to late spring...see my trip report/video for that miser...

Re: TR: Waterloo-Pinckney Trail

Background: Mr torpified and I were somehow allowed to do our jobs from California last year. I’d aimed to mount one last Sierra backpacking trip, in the Hoover Wilderness, before our return to Michigan. The worst wildfire season in west coast history put the kibosh on that plan. So since getting b...

Re: Clothing in June

I probably go with less than most people. I like to bring one set of clothes for hiking and one set for sleeping. Made a quick video to address what all that entails if you are interested: https://youtu.be/wVq6B6E4SFo. It is pretty on par for what I would bring for a June trip to the island. In addi...

Re: Wood Ducks

sneakymonkey, those videos are awesome. You are so lucky to have that in your back yard. We are hoping that we will have some young ones with the pair of wood ducks that are on our local lake. Here along the central coast of California it is not real common to see them, but they are around if you k...

Re: 2021 Hiking Trip Plan Windigo to RH - looking for feedback & suggestions

I am a big fan of going west to east. We enjoyed that direction immensely. I prefer ending at the quiet solitude of windigo instead of the hustle bustle of rock harbor. Dont get me wrong, we love both ends but the west is where it is at. That said, your plan listed above looks great. We enjoyed both...

Re: Wood Ducks

I havent seen any woodducks at the island yet, only mergansers and golden eyes. But we do have two nesting boxes in our backyard pond and we captured their nesting and hatch (+the ducklings jumping out) on film this year. It was SO COOL! In case anyone is interested: This is the ducks learning to us...

Re: 2021 Trip Advice: Minong Ridge, to Daisy Farm

Can’t speak to the back country permits but as far as the minong the beaver dams were the hardest for us. Especially the first one going East to west. We liked going East to west because our packs were their lightest on that 12 mile haul across three dams at the end. You can see that section on vide...

Re: Itinerary Critique, Suggestions or General Need-to-know.

That itinerary will work just fine! Nice sites and good mileage, your packs are a bit heavy for my taste but thats all personal preference. I would be happy to look over a gear list if you want to bring that weight down a bit. Regarding your route I would do moskey instead of chicken-bone personally...

Re: Pontoon boat

It would be interesting, for sure. I think wind (and how pontoons just love to glide sideways) might be an issue if near the shore, of course, but being careful is what it's about. I've often thought some day about bringing out a Grumman square stern Sportboat/canoe to the Isle. Not entirely practi...

Re: TR: July 6-10, 2020 Hiking the Greenstone [RH-LC-McC-SD-WC]

we had one of those types of rain storms right after finishing the minong in washington creek. The soil there held our stakes just fine but boy did we have a lot of water that afternoon. I was thankful for the bathtub style floor on our zpack triplex, and glad that the stakes held. It was SO LOUD in...
