Re: Voyageur II

Just a reminder that the VII leaves at 0730 CST now, instead of 0800 like last season! Other tips for the VII/Wenonah: - Do NOT camp at the parking lost overnight before your boat...it is not allowed. - Camping is $15 for one tent at the Casino, $10 for each additional tent, per night. - If you want...

Re: May 2009 itinerary (first paddle of IR!)

Just walked in the door from my IR trip. Short but sweet, and painfully beautiful...made me want to ask Capt Mike and Capt Don to write me an excuse letter so I could stay out there and not have to come back to work this week.

A (uneventful) trip report and pictures will be up soon.

Re: May 2009 itinerary (first paddle of IR!)

Well, nothing like waiting 'til the last minute. I'm leaving now for IR...staying in Grand Portage tonight and catching the VII in the morning. It appears our itinerary is now staying in McCargo wednesday night (one guy has never been to McCargoe or the mines around the area!), then hiking to Tod Ha...

Re: Evening Beverage

My speciality is a Nalgene flask (http://www.nalgene-outdoor.com/store/detail.aspx?ID=61) and some good 12-year scotch. Works like a charm, and lasts for a 5 day backpacking trip no problem.

Re: trekking poles

I'm a big proponent of trekking poles, and I've turned a few people on to them as well. The big thing for me is they help with your rhythm, which makes me hike a bit more efficiently. Next, it keeps you more upright, which saves your back and knees. Lastly, as others have said, it can help you navig...

Re: Sawyer water filter - What's the catch?

I don't know anything about Sawyer...as a matter of fact, I've never even heard of them. It's kind of an expensive investment to buy one and test it, only to find out it's not any good, but hey, at least you'd be a pioneer with it here on the forums ;)

Re: Greenstone vs. Minong?

The Minong is a blast, with gorgeous views, as mentioned. It's an ass-kicker, however, but if you're in relatively good shape and have a decent pack weight, you'll be perfectly content. The 13 mile stretch from Windigo to Desor is painful, but after that, it's all downhill from there. Here's picture...

Re: What do you never leave home (to Isle Royale) without?

A flask of scotch. Always.

And maybe a few cigars.

Re: Itinerary Help - 4 nights from RH

That sounds like an aggressive trip for me, but I'm out of shape. :P

You're going to be hitting all the best spots of the island, so you're going to think the toiling is worth it! Have fun.

Re: May 2009 itinerary (first paddle of IR!)

Bad news kids...our paddle trip is off :( It got too expensive for those of us who don't own canoes (that's all of us) It'd be $45/day from Bear trek (paw?) outfitters in Grand Marais for a kevlar, times two canoes, plus fees to bring the boats to and fro the island. So we decided it's not wo...

Re: Footprint or No Footprint, that is the question......

Hooray! I got to read the forums! I've been on the road, and then had to work all weekend, and they blocked the forums at work now, so I can't reply as easily as I used to :( Foot prints on IR (and just in general) are a necessity in my book. The big thing is protecting the basin of your tent from d...

Re: Coffee making, best methods

Ahh yes, coffee in the backcountry. The essential life force for me. I usually use just the Folger's singles nowadays, because they are light and easy to use. Always double 'em up...'cause one is not enough caffeine. And backpack out your refuse from the singles! As far as the java press, you do NOT...

Re: shelter vs. tent sites

I shouldn't prefer a shelter, but I do. I like the deep backcountry feel of no shelters, tables, etc., but man, sometimes they are a nice luxury. Also, given the weather factor, sometimes it's the best to sit in a shelter when it's pouring rain outside the open-face shelter and you are sitting insid...

All your feedback is absolutely phenomenal, and we're looking at assimulating all of your inputs (especially re: Livermore and Lesage). head2north: your reviews of what sites are the best is also exactly what we're looking for. Glad we picked a good route (since you like it so much!). And it'll be o...

Re: May 2009 itinerary (first paddle of IR!)

Thanks for your response, KevinL! The detailed report makes me feel a little better about the portages.

Not sure about the Chickenbone to Richie. According to the map we have, it's one portage, but I'll double-check now. Thanks for the heads-up.
