Re: Rock Harbor to Cemetery Island
Being a history buff, plan on staying at Caribou. It is central to exploring Cemterary Island and spending time at the fishery and lighthouse. A whole day can be spent at the fishery, the lighthouse and along the north shore near the lighthouse. You can also hit Bergsund Cabin. I have read of a trai...

Re: Rock Harbor to Cemetery Island
Did Rock Harbor to cemetary island in 2.5 hours in a canoe with two following the outer south islands (due to wind) on a relatively calm day at a leasurely pace. Wind kicked up on the way back but it was at our backs. Got back in 1.5 hours basically trying to keep the nose in the waves. Would have b...

Re: The Far Away Moment
I was was thinking of it for sure. I am not on the first boat after making it the last two years. Plus, one year ago today, I proposed to my now wife at Rainbow Cove at sunset.

Re: Place to stay in Copper Harbor
Thread link has a lot of info. I recommend King Copper. Nice and close to boat and clean in my experience. I've stayed at Bella Vista and have nothing bad to say, but would take King Copper over it. For absolute budget, Fort Wilkins is the place. It is farther from the dock and at the beginning and ...

Re: hiking ir
For a first trip out of Rock Harbor, I would suggest taking the Rock Harbor trail to Moskey then up to the Greenstone through Lake Richie and looping back as a goal. This route has a lot of options if you are unable to make the full distance and has a few trails that can be taken as day hikes if wal...

Re: NP annual pass question
I couldn't agree more Nick. It is nice talking to a human, finding out the latest and, in the spring and fall, there are too many travel variables to be considered.

Re: NP annual pass question
You can purchase the season pass by calling the headquarters in Houghton and doing it over the phone with a CC. Last year they did not get them in until March. When you make your reservation with the Voyageur, just tell them you have a season pass and they may ask to see it when you board.

Re: Help with some names from the old web board
Larry, the sound is from North Desor Campground in spring, 09' when the waves and wind were kicking up. It was recorded sitting in my tent staring at the lake. A beautiful "solo" night in an empty campground on the island after walking that long, beautiful , hard stretch between Little Tod...

Wright Island
Has anyone been to Wright Island? The 2007-2010 Greenstone shows a day use dock. I do not believe the previous years showed one (I have to dig them out). The original trails illustrated map shows 2 structures and no dock. The revised trails illustrated map shows 1 structure and no dock. I am curious...

Re: Breakfast ideas
I do oatmeal with a couple of Mountainhouse eggs & bacon unless doing ultra-light. Then I do grape nuts and powdered milk with a couple of Mountainhouse. ALWAYS coffee though! Lately been doing the french press. Mmmmm.....

Help with some names from the old web board
I am finally finishing up my book on Isle Royale. Along with it, there is a completely redesigned and updated website that takes the book and offers many sections of it online. This will be unveiled next week. As part of that, the first section has some thank you's to people who I have used info fro...

Re: Cultural Resources Management Plan
When I was at the headquarters in Houghton this fall, I eavesdropped on a conversation between Liz Valenzia (sp?) the cultural resources person and someone from MTU who had conducted archiological studies at the park and they were having a discussion about setting up Crystal Cove as a campground des...

Re: Getting married. Need help...
This is a topic I have investigated. I proposed at Rainbow Cove at sunset. She jokes that I did it there because, if she said no, I would have left her there :) We then planned on getting married on the boat on the way over believing a boat captain could perform the ceremony. This, as mentioned by o...

Re: Gaitors
I also bring my rain pants, but have only worn them once while walking thanks to my gaitors and that was in a torrential downpour. I do however use them as my outer layer funtioning as a windbreaker at camp. They are lightwight "frogg toggs" and make for a very nice pillow at night and pad...

Re: Gaitors
I would not go without them. Hopefully they are not needed, but if it rains, they are essential in keeping your boots dry and preventing your socks from wicking water into your boots. After it rains on the island, not only is the underbrush wet, but the water is draining in little rivers on the trai...
