Re: Adding wolves to IR, how it would work
Tortuga, I have noticed the same thing. It would be interesting to know how many FB "anti wolf" posters have been to the island. This forum seems to be made up of folks who have been to the island or are very serious about going to the island (and therefore see the wolves as part of the fa...

Re: Tent for 3, or individual?
We used a tent last summer and supplemented it with a tarp. We used the tarp to cover gear or a picnic table in the rain. That might save you from buying (and carrying!) extra tents.

Re: Best cell signal at West end of island?
I have Verizon -- visited the west end of the island via Grand Portage. My signal ended during the drive north around Grand Marais. I don't think Verizon is an viable option until they upgrade their service area.

Thank you for the report, I'm starting to feel guilty about my "writer's block." Always love when the report details good/bad decisions, always learn from both.

Re: Planning a 8 day adventure... looking for some advice
Sounds like a great trip -- you have some fairly long days planned, my assumption is that you know your abilities/limits. I hiked from McCargoe Cove to Windigo via that route this summer (we stayed at Little Todd, so we added one day along the Minong). The only potential weakness is mother nature: t...

Re: Reintroduction of Lynx
I asked a ranger this summer about the caribou on Isle Royale -- it seems to me that she said human's hunted them to the point of no return.

What a great trip -- love the combo backpacking/kayaking (and big miles for both).

Re: Bugs???
I've decided that bugs on Isle Royale are as variable as the weather. A trip report 2 days before my Minong trip reported few to no bugs (same trail, a week apart). We had an inch of rain the first night/day on the trail and the bugs were very active (we used both spray and head nets on multiple sec...

Re: Itinerary for 9-4 to 9-10 Feedback/answers
Here are some of the answers to your questions based on my August trip to the west end of IR: 1) The Windigo store is winding down their inventory. They had plenty of fuel the week of August 14th. Only 1 person needs to handle the registration process with the Park Service, the others can go to the ...

Re: Freeze-dried foods at Windigo and Rock Harbor stores?
No restaurant in Windigo. There is a Youtube video that shows the entire inventory of the Windigo store. It it from a couple of years ago, so the inventory could be different today. The video does a good job of illustrating what types of supplies the store carries (including fuel). Here is the link:...

Re: Drop off
You have a couple of options: 1) Mail a package to yourself in Windigo and pick it up on the dock when you arrive there at the conclusion of your hike (see the Park Service website for details). 2) Make arrangements with the folks that run the Voyageur II and have them deliver the package in Windido...

Re: minong ridge with kids?
I think the approach is to make the trip as fun as possible, with maximum flexibility. Later in the summer my daughter (16) and I will be on the Minong. It won't be a race! Here is a video of a father with his two sons (age 10 & 12) on the Minong a few summers ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
