Know before you go: masks optional for all IRNP facilities (as of 8/16/22)

I guess we live in the day and age where government policy is posted to social media, so here you go: Due to a high-community spread of COVID-19, masks are currently required inside of all Isle Royale buildings and aboard the vessel RANGER III. Stay up-to-date with what is happening in and around th...

Re: Is new store in Windigo open yet?

I can confirm that as of 7/13/21, the new Windigo store is NOT open. They received "the last bit of items" the need to finish the store when the Ranger came into Windigo this week. I would not anticipate the new store opening this year. Also, according to my source that left Windigo on the...

You, Ingo and Kelly...you've inspired me. I wonder if something similar is available in Wisconsin...

Re: Windigo to Rock Harbor Itinerary

This is a totally doable hike. I've done it once at the same age. Your first day hike is easy. The 13 mile day will be a lot due to the nature of hiking 13 miles, but that's it. Since you caught this rare Ranger-to-Windigo boat (didn't know that was a thing), I think this is a fantastic itinerary fo...

Re: TR: 5/2022 [Windigo to RH via Minong and GRT]

WOW, your trip report is thorough. And the pics are fantastic...that one of Sleeping Giant is beautiful, as well as the ridge pic from the firetower. That creek crossing looked harrowing. A lot of your trip looked interesting. I like how when I asked you how your hike was, you just said, "it wa...

Tons on the shore! Even an iceberg or two on the lake even.

The Rock Harbor store was not open. There was no opening date posted either. There were boxes of merchandise stacked up in there, though.

I'd recommend you do option #2 as well. Better campsites, much more scenic.

TR: 5/18-5/22/22, Belle Isle & Rock Harbor

Just got back from a four-day excursion to Isle Royale. It was my first time on the island where I was actually camping and not working on the Rock of Ages Lighthouse in five years! It was good to be back. We were the second boat out of Grand Portage to IRNP. The interpretive rangers at Windigo fina...

Post your 2022 bug reports here!

Just got back from five days at Belle Isle and Rock Harbor. Figured I could share a bug report since it will be easy: As of May 22nd, 2022, there are NO BUGS on Isle Royale, because it is FREAKING COLD. I did see one very confused black fly trying to figure out its life in a Belle Isle biff bu...

I'd give the front desk at the Casino a call and see if they can work out a deal for your group. In my experience, it seems like they'd be willing to work with you.

Re: Feldtmann loop or not

I vote for the Feldtmann loop. I like lake Feldtmann...quiet and remote, and decent shore fishing (but yeah, don't swim there). Sunsets at Rainbo Cove are also a must. The hike up the Feldtmann ridge is fun. Siskiwit Bay is one of the best places for a sunset. Island Mine isn't bad, and the hike alo...

Re: What would you do?

After arriving at Rock Harbor on the Queen and wanting to put some mileage behind us would you hike the shoreline trail to Daisy Farm, past Moskey to Lake Richie, OR would you go up to Mt. Franklin from Three Mile and then camp at West Chickebone? West Chickenbone is actually nice. East Chickenbone...
