Re: GRT FKT - travel itinerary

The only record I could find of anyone even doing this in < 24 hours was someone who posted on a backpacker.com website with his username indicating 10 hrs and change. When I worked at R.H. in '79 two employees, college aged females, hiked it in a day. Don't remember the time, but they arrived in W...

Re: GRT FKT - travel itinerary

Second thoughts on getting from Hidden Lake to R.H. Since you have a crew and said money is not an issue, just have them rent a motor boat from the lodge. It will be more flexible, more room, and quicker than a canoe, and avoid the timing issues--assuming your crew are friends who are willing to wai...

Re: GRT FKT - travel itinerary

Sounds like a good basic plan to me. A couple thoughts: - You can fly into Windigo and out of Rock Harbor, avoiding the need to get back to Windigo. In fact, I don't know any reason not to. - You could then make your Day 2 be any day the Voyageur II makes an outbound trip. In July when they do a ful...

Re: Canoe Seat Opinions

Personally I've never used a seat back, and never felt the need for one. In heavy waves and/or hard paddling, I'm probably kneeling anyways. But the original seat itself makes a huge difference--hate anything molded, plastic or aluminum. Wood frame (usually ash) with caning is the best, nylon webbin...

Park Service getting ready

From the IRKPA: "Lots of activity this drizzly day at Isle Royale HQ as the LCM (Landing Craft Mechanized) prepares to haul boats and equipment to the island tomorrow. The crane on the barge docked to the right of the Ranger III is loading the LCM alongside."

I've rented kevlar canoes a couple times, and they have other equipment too. Not much else on the North Shore itself, although I haven't searched in a few years.

John, I got the Microrocket a couple weeks ago (elsewhere), and have used it once. Cooked pancakes great, with a small aluminum fry pan! So it is good for more than just boiling water.

Re: Camera support strap for backpacking

Been researching this myself and think that I've settled on this Lowepro bag to carry on my chest: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/672948-REG/Lowepro_LP36185_0EU_Toploader_Zoom_50_AW.html I like the simplicity, cost, and convenience of just the strap, but I think the protection factor is going...

Re: Sleeping Pad: Open cell vs Closed cell

Just got a Nemo Astro Insulated, but only have 1 night on it. So far, so good :). What drew me away from the NeoAir was the noise I heard from the tent next to me one night, when I shared a campsite last summer. Couldn't figure out what it was, then found out in the morning that they had a couple of...

Re: New Park Regulations for Food Storage

Has their been any experience from those here where that hasn't worked? Like others, keep food in tent/shelter. However, we did have a squirrel chew through netting, pack, and into the trail mix once--we were in camp, and the food bag was in the tent, up against the door netting. After that we made...

Re: Multi-Use Items???

I recently replaced all of my bags for tent, pad, etc. with these velcro straps: http://www.rei.com/product/794899/rei-sport-wrap-package-of-2 In addition to saving 12 oz, I've found them great for hanging and attaching things to trees, like my Platypus gravity filter bags and lines. Probably better...

No, we're not going to push on past Island Mine this summer. I'm going to have to stay, just so I can join the forum fray  .

Re: New look for Park Service Website

OK, DON'T PANIC! (it's technical) I emailed the park service and got a quick reply. Bottom line is that it's all supposed to be there, and will be worked out. At the moment the I.R. staff cannot edit or update their own site. Apparently getting the new site up (across all parks) is not going as smoo...

Re: New look for Park Service Website

Hopefully they will put the links back in, and add the Sea Hunter. Hard to believe there's NO contact info whatsoever. Makes me wonder if there's a new NPS policy of not providing contact info to private companies on their site--which may make sense for some parks, but is absurd for I.R. since just ...
