it sounds like an awesome trip! I like the idea of dayhiking to East Chickenbone---I really like the trail on that side of the lake, and it would be a shame for that trail to be underfrequented just because the ECB campsite is unloved. When you realized that the water at Island Mine was marginal, we...

Thanks for the outstanding trip report and the boardwalk census! We should add, and crowdsource, a sticky for a " distance between campsites" type grid, only reporting boardwalk counts instead. Have you figured out what your wispy bug was?

Re: Duluth to Grand Portage
a theoretical possibility, one I haven't field-tested: before Covid, the casino rain a shuttle between Grand Portage and Thunder Bay (Ontario), which has an airport. You'd still need to figure out how to get from the casino to the dock. Also passports would add 113 gms to your base weights.

That's some stupendous ambling! But will there be calypso orchids in future installments? I'm on tenterhooks.
I'm also curious about the dormant fire ring. It doesn't exactly look surreptitious --- is it a decommissioned, formerly sanctioned site? Or the work of a scofflaw who scoffed big?

Re: Greenstone Vs Minong
I've no up-to-date beta on the Minong to offer, but I'll report that I find it a *much* more interesting and scenic way to cross the western chunk of the island than the Greenstone, which spends a lot of time in the woods. The Minong poses more challenges --- you need to pay attention to follow it, ...

Re: Crowd size
I was there in late May/early June. I've visited twice before in roughly that window. It seemed busier this time than the other two, particularly around the intake points. (This impression could be an artefact of arriving at WIndigo to start the Feldtmann Loop in sync with a Voyageurfull of other vi...

Re: Sandals on Greenstone Ridge
feet are so particular that I suspect that the only true footwear generalization is: if it works for you, it works for you. The one thing I'll chip in (and it's really an amplification of some of what's already been said) is that there are options intermediate between sandals and boots---for instanc...

what a great route for an inaugural trip, and what a fantastic report! I'm glad that you found your way out of the McCargo campground (a place I have also wandered ergodically while the strains of "M.T.A." ran through my head) to file it! Did the ranger mention that the bunchberry, perhaps...

thanks for the terrific report, and splendid pictures! It looks like you had a superfun adventure, with pancakes and rhubarb bars to boot. It's helping to consolidate my resolve to get myself organized for a canoe-based visit. (An aspect of advanced planning I've failed to execute is furnishing myse...

Re: 2020 Bald Eagles, Peregrines and Loons on IR
Will be on the lookout for eagles on my VIP Photo trip. Chief, you're probably already all over this, but: as of early June there was an active bald eagle nest---two adults--- right along the trail to Scoville point. It's near the junction between the spur to the point and the loop part of the trai...

Re: Hiking and camping trip
Here's a start --- I bet others will extend the list. Concerning route ideas, where are you arriving to/leaving from? If "Rock Harbor" is the answer to both questions, you can store a package (of clean clothes, etc.) at the lodge office for $3.50/day while you walk, then be joyfully reunit...

Re: latest on beaver damage
they've flooded out some boardwalk on the trail to Malone, a little north of where it crosses the Siskiwit Lake inlet (or outlet?). But they've cooperatively constructed a dam you can use to cross the flooded bit. There's a picture, along with a gripping account, in this trip report: https://isleroy...

Re: Campfires
For what it's worth, it struck me that the orientation we got upon arriving at Rock Harbor was pretty short on LNT principles and their rationale. It seemed to focus instead on bracing visitors for the absence of WiFi, cell phone signals, and Starbucks. "Campfires only in designated areas"...
