Re: NPCA State of the Parks
I understand why the Park Service would want to keep Isle Royale, as well as other parks, in their natural, rugged state, however, the local history of those places is what makes them interesting and gives them their own charm and mystique. Yeah, it's nice to hike/backpack in the wilderness and leav...

Re: "What are you spending your REI dividend on?" 2009 edition
Ya know what? My buddy got a sleeping pad several years ago and I wondered why, because I had never had one and always managed to sleep fairly well without one. During one hiking trip I borrowed his sleeping pad and tried it out. Needless to say, I was hooked and wondered why I had never thought to ...

Re: Albino Moose
Even if it's not an albino moose, and just a white moose, it is still pretty cool-looking.

Re: food help on first trip
I was going to add my "two cents" on the whole meal "thing" the other day but never got around to it. My buddy and I normally have a mix of things for meals. We have had a couple different dinner-type Mountain House meals over the years and they have always been tasty, so I norma...

Re: Ice Caves and Ice Climbing in the UP
Be interesting to see if any critters cross over to IR. Yeah, especially since the Winter Study folks seem to think that some collared wolves may have gone off to Canada... Isle Royale is embedded in ice. Despite extensive searches for the collared wolves, they again went undetected. February 23rd ...

Looks like we both read the same article. I just posted the same link in the "Ice Caves and Ice Climbing in the UP" thread in the "Trip Reports" section not knowing that you had it listed here.

Looks like you can darn near walk across Superioir to I.R. right now. Check out the article on this page http://www.crh.noaa.gov/mqt/?n=lake_superior_ice. If you click on the photo you will see a larger picture. There's a lot of ice out there.

Re: Winter Study
Looks like the Winter Wolf Study is over for the season ( http://www.isleroyalewolf.org/wsjournal/wtrstdy/index/CF0A5E01-0DD8-4469-9687-1A0F24E8088A.html ) :( . I've been following it since the start of the season and it's hard to believe they are finished. Their final report is due out in a few wee...

Re: Water filter recommendation?
Tom, I have the same thing to say about the Pur Hiker. My buddy got one before our first trip and we have used it on every hiking trip since then. It is small and packs away nicely and it works like a champ. We also have never had a problem with it clogging and we too have put it in some pretty nast...

This looks like an awesome movie. I may have to convince the wife and family to make a trip down to the Detroit IMAX viewing.

A slaw dog, huh? Never had one and I must say the thought of a hot dog, slaw and BBQ sauce doesn't sound very appetizing, but nonetheless, I'd be willing to try it.

Re: Documentary Updates
I've been keeping up with the Winter Wolf Study (http://www.isleroyalewolf.org/wsjournal ... index.html) and anxiously await each new post. I'm sure the movie will be even better. I can't wait to see it!
