Re: Kayak trip 23-30 May 2016.
The trip was great. Only one other sea kayaker. He got there on Friday. We met him when we got back to Caribou Island after our day trip to Chippewa Harbor. He left for CH the next morning.

Kayak trip 23-30 May 2016.
For our third trip I planned two itineraries. One for the south shore and one for the north shore. The trip ended up being a combination of both. 23 May. Took the Queen out of Copper Harbor and the wind and waves lessened as we got closer to the island. The lake was fairly calm and the south wind ab...

Re: Mott Island
The Mott Island trail is very nice. We did it in 2014. As we are sea kayakers getting there was no problem for us.

Re: Paddler dies off of Port Washington in WI
Paddling a sea kayak is only half of it. Planning and risk assessment is the other half.

Re: Paddler dies off of Port Washington in WI
It is really hard to talk people out of doing these things. They just don't believe you. They get away with these risky behaviors on nice days so when they eventually get caught up in bad conditions, they get a bad surprise, sometime fatally. They never check the marine forecast. They think that you...

Re: Gps coordinates
Thanks, IncaRoads. That was a very useful site. I create waypoints in Garmin Base Camp and then import to my gps for the trip. If anyone needs to know where to get the locations of aids to navigation (light houses, bouys, etc), the US Coast Guard Light List provides them.

Gps coordinates
Does anyone have the gps coordinates for Siskiwit Bay and Big Todd Harbor campgrounds? We will go back this May for our third kayak trip and I like to navigate with a combination of chart and gps. Very handy to have a gps on a foggy day. On our 2014 trip we would not have found the entrance to McCar...

Re: Isle Royale Webcams
The float plane dock in Tobin Harbor is removed for the winter. When we were there in May 2013, we launched our kayaks there and it was stacked on land. Just a good sized snow bank was at that location.

Re: Novice Kayaker - Tobin Harbor?
I doubt if there is any safer place on IR where you can rent a kayak and use it than Tobin Harbor. If you don't act silly in the boat, Tobin Harbor is the place for people with limited kayaking experience. Any sensible, prudent person could take a rental kayak or canoe over to the LL dock on a calm ...

Re: 4 to 5 day Kayak Trip Ideas
My wife and I have kayaked IR twice. We paddled 101 miles in May 2014. It was a great trip and we covered from McCargoe Cove to Moskey Basin and out to Mine Point in Conglomerate Bay. The key to kayaking IR or anyplace else on Lake Superior is to have and understand the marine weather forecast. With...

Re: Sleeping Bags and Coats
While I am not a backpacker and my kayak carries all my gear, I can offer a few ideas. I bought a -20 down sleeping bag in 1971 and have never regretted it. I use it to this day in cooler weather. IR is a place that it is better to have warm gear than not have it. Get the down bag and get a compress...

Re: McCargoe Cove
The campsites are very close to the dock where you will be let off the ferry. I am a kayaker and I didn't hike in that area so I can't speak to day hiking in that area. You arrange your own water supply by having a water filter and filtering all your water. We use Lake Superior water for filtering w...

Re: Kayaking Trip Itinerary: RH-DF-MB-CI-TI-RH: Please Criti
Your itinerary is very easily done in two days in a sea kayak. I would say that you have built in weather days in this itinerary. The most important piece of safety equipment after your pfd is a good weather radio. Have a good one. The Isle Royale recreational forecast comes out of Copper Harbor at ...

Re: IR Trip Planning Help Needed
I have never heard of anything to rent at Chippewa Harbor. I would never take a canoe from there to Malone. A very perilous undertaking in a canoe. I hope to take my sea kayak out that way and I just last Sunday planned out the trip. Even with a sea kayak and dressed for immersion you would have to ...

Tree Ratt, the Michigan Sate Police is the best place to find out how to comply with the cpl law in Michigan. Here is the link: http://mich.gov/msp/0,1607,7-123-1591_3503_4654---,00.html The last topic on this list is on reciprocity. I think that you will find everything that you need to know on the...
