Alternative to First Boats

First Boats.JPG
We're ready. Voyageur? We don't need no Voyageur. Queen? We don't need no Queen. Just need a slight opening in the ice.

Re: Voyager II (Rock Harbor to Windigo)

You should get reservations ahead of time. I got mine last January. Just go to their web page to reserve.

Re: Opening Day Weather

I'm still looking at solid ice across to Canada here at Paddler's Point, my home in the Eastern UP. Although warmer weather is predicted for the next few days, ice is very thick and I doubt if it will break up in the next month. Makes me wonder when the boat will be able to get into McCargo and if I...

Re: May 5 Voyageur II Pushed to 12th

Captain Don, Thanks for the call last night. I really appreciate it and I'm glad I was able to reschedule. Thanks for your professionalism. I kind of figured that the 5th would be cancelled, too. I'm sitting here in the UP looking across Lake Huron to Canada and the only open water is the shipping c...

Re: Adding wolves to IR, how it would work

I don't know if you noticed the suggestion that ISRO might be closed as early as this fall to allow the unmolested introduction of the new wolves. I, for one, would gladly forgo a fall trip to make the reintroduction more manageable. Might be hard to stop people that don't take the commercial vessel...

Re: Opening Day Weather

I'm sitting here at my home in the Eastern U.P. I'm looking across two miles of solid ice, except for the shipping lanes, to Canada. The ice is probably 30" thick. I'm all packed for the Voyaguer II on May 5th. Food is all dehydrated and organized in tapered dry bags. I've test packed the kayak...

Re: Oil Spill in the Straits

Since this is close to where I live, here are some things going on. The Coast Guard has established an Emergency Operations Center to deal with this. It is my understanding that one of the high voltage electrical transmission lines was damaged and was leaking a substance akin to mineral oil. Last I ...

Re: Vegan Backpacking Food

I've made Chow Mien at home and dehydrated it and it's been great. I made a big pot of lentil soup and did the same. Most recently, I've done some Jimmy Dean sausage for hot sausage soup and found that a bit greasy if you don't rinse it really well. The Harmony House "meats" are soy based ...

Re: Are the showers and laundry open by mid May?

I'd invest in a Sun Shower if you can handle the extra weight (I kayak, so I have that luxury). Showers have never been open when I've been there in early May.

Re: Vegan Backpacking Food

My daughter is vegetarian and informed me on our first trip to IR in 2008 that freeze dried dinners were off the table because of meats and additives. So, I started dehydrating everything and meal planning with her input. Even when she does not come along, I still use most of the vegetarian meals as...

Re: Food dehydrator recommendations?

I've used a Nesco SnackMaster for years. I've done everything in it from fruit to vegetables, to stews, to chow mien, and I love it. Fruit Roll kits and Clean-a-Screens are important for sauces and salsa as well as smaller items. You can really dehydrate almost anything in it and my homemade recipes...

Re: Isle Royale Queen Reservations - Filling up

Been booked on the first boat for quite a while. BUT, I've got 30" of ice in front of my place here on Northern Lake Huron. Will the first boat run? Any thoughts?

Some...but, portages are portages, trails are trails. :) Haven't done the Tobin Harbor to Duncan Bay or the Lake Richie/Chippewa Harbor to Lake Siskiwit ones.

Re: trail runners?

Kevinl...don't forget that great food you were given at Washington Creek on that trip. I remember when you came into the campground after you fished your run. I knew an ISRO Law Enforcement Ranger who was station at Malone Bay and did the Malone Bay to Ishpeming Tower run to keep in shape. Don't thi...
