Re: Mott Island Webcam

After watching for awhile after dark, I notice what seems to be a bright blinking light, reflecting on the ice.

Re: Mott Island Webcam

Wonderful and exciting. I am still pushing for a Washington Creek Moose Cam.

The Ranger III in Houghton (can presently be seen during daylight hours) on this Michigan Tech Web Cam. It's on the extreme left, 40% of the way up from the bottom.

Re: Pike fishing and kayaking from RH to McCargoe cove

Hello flyguy, You didn't mention where you are driving from. Even if it might be an extra 2 to 4 hours of driving, consider taking the Voyageur II from Grand Portage MN. You can schedule drop off and pickup at either McCargoe Cove or Belle Isle. Then you can avoid the risk of Blake Point or the stee...

Re: 2nd Isle Royale Trip Itinerary Ideas - RH-DF-CH-MC

Leech danger is over rated but indeed there is the icky factor. As a kid we used to get them all the time swimming in Michigan lakes, usually under docks. If removed properly they rarely cause a sore that lasts long. My Mom used to dump salt on them which is sometimes NOT a good thing to do. It kill...

Re: 2nd Isle Royale Trip Itinerary Ideas - RH-DF-CH-MC

That stretch between McCargoe Cove and Todd Harbor is probably the easiest section of the Minong Trail. Still not a "walk in the park" though, not that it really fits into your itinerary this trip. I too much prefer the campgrounds on the Big Lake to the inland ones. In addition to not hav...

Re: Eastern end bushwacking

I think you could maybe get down to the north Duncan Bay shoreline but first you must bushwack more than 2 miles further northeast along the Greenstone Ridge before heading downslope. Of course the bigger question and maybe insurmountable feat is whether the shoreline would allow the more than 1 mil...

Re: When will VII start taking reservations

The last issue to be solved is linking the online system, website and the cloud server, there has been some issues there that are being worked on as we speak. There's something really funny about Capt Don talking nerdy. How about if he added this tone?: " Avast, me hearties! The last issue to ...

Re: When will VII start taking reservations

This is a direct quote from the current park website regarding their procedure for processing group camping permits: "Isle Royale starts receiving group camping requests in January, those submitted in January will be randomly selected and processed starting February 1. Those requests received o...

Re: Minong Ridge Trail suggestion?

Your previous trip mirrors my second one in 1975. I haven’t done the stretch of Minong from Little Todd to Windigo so my opinion is based on the collective opinion of reading and talking to others. I’m never comfortable giving differential advice (do this vs. do that). It always seems to depend so m...

Jeremy,

Good for you. There is an old saying, "Watch the ounces and the pounds will take care of themselves." Have you cut the handle off your toothbrush yet?

Re: Advice on short hikes?

The trail from Hidden Lake to Lookout Louise goes right past Monument Rock, at least within a couple of hundred feet if memory serves. There is a picture of Monument Rock, I took from the trail, in this report from 2013. Edison Fishery dock is also shown: http://isleroyaleforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=...

Re: Advice on short hikes?

It sounds like you are boating. If not then most of the following still applies. I'm not familiar with Finlander with respect to IR. The dock at the Edison Fishery is one of many public docks you may use but you cannot overnight. There is usually a volunteer or volunteer couple at Edison to help ans...
