Re: Winter Study 2015

wow. Looking at the 2 that came over and then comparing them to the pics of the existing wolves is a real eye opener.

Re: BWCA

Thanks head2north. Would a basecamp on Cherokee also give me some walleye fishing options for day trips out of there? it looks like there are a ton of day trip options in general and I've thought about a base camp for a few nights on Cherokee and then doing the temperance loop on the way back. I've ...

Re: BWCA

I signed up at bwca.com last week. Its been a pretty good source of general info so far. The focus is fishing, so i'm trying to go through the report section now.

BWCA - Questions and a Brief Trip Report

I got talked into doing a boundary waters trip. On 5/24 we go in at Sawbill Lake and come out on 5/29. I've never been up there, so I'm not sure what to expect, have no idea about routes and hope I can figure out which lakes have the best fishing. My buddy and I are still "negotiating" the...

Re: 2 wolves cross to IR-then go back

In the glass is half full department, we only know those two came because one was radio collared and the boys of the winter study saw them. What's to say there weren't others that came across the ice bridge and perhaps at least one stayed?

Dare to dream!

That North side of the island is something I haven't seen firsthand yet. Looking forward to your trip report in 5 or 6 months.

Re: Questions from a first timer...

I did part of your proposed route (S. Desor, Siskiwit, Feldtman) with a hammock. S Desor's group sites are lacking for a good place to hang as are siskiwit's sites. I agree with Tom. A couple of hammocks would be fine, but any more would be iffy.

Re: Visitor perception of "private" areas on Isle Royale?

My interpretation of the rules is that you'd need a backcountry permit to camp anywhere other than designated campsites, regardless of whether you paddled, motored or hoofed it to a spot.

Re: IR Trip Planning Help Needed

Everyone that has gone to Windigo from Grand Portage has used them. Capt Don is a member here. Good people. Here's the link to their posting of the 2015 rates and schedules with some feedback for you. http://isleroyaleforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2695 If they drop off at Chippewa at 9am, then ...

Sad story. You have to question why someone would decide to do that given the forecast, or why someone would let a loved to attempt it.

Re: Pack: Size and Weight Recommendations for 4-6 days on IR

You're going to get a bunch of different opinions and set ups, so here's mine. I did a 5 day solo last fall and my pack weight was 32lbs according to the scale at Windigo. I had the following in a 50L pack: 6 days of food, consisting of SB Via coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner, mid-morning and mid af...

Re: Acadia National Park

I'll be researching in my spare time and would be happy to share everything I find out, whether through the research or first hand experience. I was more than a little disappointed to learn that there is no backcountry camping, but the place looks so beautiful that I'll deal with it. I'm wondering i...

Acadia National Park

I've picked up a new client in Maine and Acadia is just an hour or two up the coast. I'd like to plan a 4 or 5 day stay at Acadia on the back end of a customer meeting. Does anyone have any thoughts to share on their past experiences or any particular resources that might help in the planning proces...

Re: Yellowstone Cell Connectivity

The first trip to Yosemite with my son found him worried that he couldn't call mom and tell her he was OK. The last time we came out of the back country, he turned on his phone and had a VM from his GF asking if he was OK and then a string of bewildered turning to distressed "Why aren't you cal...
