Re: First trip to Isle Royale

Awesome. Thanks for the info!! Any recommendations on what lures work well. I figure spoons and Rapalas for the northern and walleye. I have never fished for lake trout or had good luck with perch. I would guess small tube jigs for the perch? Is there much structure in the lakes? I know when I go t...

Re: First trip to Isle Royale

Welcome to the Forums! We haev gone the last 4 years or so the last week of May to avoid the bugs. This year, as the temps are warmer and ice out is occuring earlier, bugs will be a crap shoot, but you definitlely stand a better chance of avoiding them by going early. Paddling Superior is an issue t...

Re: What do you never leave home (to Isle Royale) without?

Well.. Last year, my wife and I ended up packing 4 six packs of our favorite belgium ale, cans of course. YES, and I couldn't believe it either...a case of beer. Unbelievable. And we obviously weren't backpacking! Ahhh, the luxuries of kayaking! Besides that, I'd have to say my multi-tool/repair ki...

How much experience do you have? Another option would be to catch a ride on the Voyageur to Chippewa. If you paddel there how do you plan on getting back?

Re: Beginner's Kayak Trip

What kind of kayaks do you paddle? Do they have watertight bulheads that seperate the cockpit from the front and rear compartments? Do you have spray skirts? Wetsuits?

We missed you! We were absolutely slammed at the Pyranha/P&H booth and weren't able to get around to check anything out.

Oh well!

That explains a lot, I went by the Necky booth looking for you. The folks working there looked at me like I had 2 heads. :)

Re: 2007 trip to ISRO, 2nd time Solo

jerry,
Thanks for taking the time to write a great and detailed TR.
I wonder if you caught part of ther Perseid meteor shower.
Pretty cool that you were on the "Aircraft Carrier Ranger".
The detail of your time and distance is great, good reference for future trips.

Thanks jerry!

Re: Canoecopia 2010, IRNP will be there

Canoecopia went well, Captain Don at the Voyuageur booth and Ranger Blust, niners and myself had a great time hearing of adventures on Isle Royale, particualrly from the folks who were there in the 60's and 70's. We spoke to many people who had an interest in going and/or knew of IR but weren't quit...

Re: first Itinerary questions for 2010

OTOH, we were just shown the map and given no specific instructions other than not to camp outside the approved zones. (This on Ranger III) We were not given a copy of the map, so after getting our permits, we had to rely on our memories as to where the zone boundaries were. It was not explained tha...
