Re: My packing list & weights

Yikes. That's a heavy load, especially since you stated that your base weight did not include your tent :/ With the tent you probably have a 30 Lb pack. 30 pounds is more than I would want after food and water is added into the figures. Ever think about lightening up a little. Right now my base weig...

Re: Trip Report - Windigo to Rock Harbor, May 30-June 3, 201

Glad everything worked out in the end. That is a real pain, with the Rangers not having a clue about the water taxi and with the lodge telling you that your plane was going to arrive at 2pm only to find out that he was their at 11:30am and took off without you. The pilot and the Royale Air schedule,...

Re: Moose Encounter: A How-to

I would suggest not getting knocked over by the animal or taking to the ground, especially not with a mother and it's calf. If you watch the first two videos, you will see that the mother tries to trample all threats to her baby. In the first video, an individual on a college campus gets too close t...

Re: Weighing gear

Just picked up the scale that was suggested from Amazon. I am hoping it it pretty accurate. Past scales that I have purchased have been very glitchy and unreliable. However, this one has a lot of great reviews and satisfied customers. With free shipping, I figured why not give it a shot :)

Re: Place to stay in Copper Harbor

I like the Bella Vista. It is the only place I have stayed at when going to Isle Royale but for $83 + tax (basically $90) a night, I decided to opt out go using their motels this year. This price applies to the motels, not the cottages or house cabins. However, the motels seem most modern compared t...

Re: Midwest Mountaineering Outdoor Adventure Expo - April 15

This Midwest Mountaineering Expo sounds like super fun. 3 questions...I live in Chicago, so driving to Minnesota is quite a distance, do they ever hold it in other places? Is the spring and fall expo's similar in size and offerings? Does the site list all vendors that are going to be at the booths a...

Btw, I did a little search for you. If you are interested in reading more about how this will affect national parks feel free to read more in depth on it here http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110408/ap_ ... al_workers

Re: What happens in case of a Govt. shutdown?

Something like this apparently happened at some point in the 90's. The government partially shutdown for 26 days, not sure how this affected the status of whether or not the parks remained open or closed. However, I believe Damon is correct and I believe this also was the case by in the day.

Re: Malone Bay

Good question. I am interested in hearing the answers you receive. It's a 7.2 miles hike of of the greenstone trail and it really sticks to think that you would have to re-hike that same 7.2 miles to exit this location. I've thought about being picked up from their when I got to Isle Royale this yea...

Re: trekking poles, rain gear for May-June trip

I understand where you are coming from with regards to weighing the cost vs benefit of carrying these extra items. As someone that appreciates carrying the lightest backpack possible and the philosophy of ultralight backpacking, I am all about being as minimalistic as possible. However, there are ce...

Re: Shelter Graffiti

I agree Tom, I believe there are plenty of other better things to discuss on the forum. So if nobody else has any objections with casting this argument aside, I completely fine with that. I still would not mind seeing any of graffiti that people took pictures of while on their vacation, so for all y...

Re: Shelter Graffiti

First and foremost, read before you chitter chatter away about things that I have already confirmed. The point of this discussion is to debate over the context of graffiti in shelters, not to read between the lines of what other people have written just so you can let out hot air and have the chance...

Re: Shelter Graffiti

Good grief, man... l can't believe you're taking the time to write a legal journal supporting graffiti in the shelters Ha Ha Ha. I was expecting to get a reply in a likewise manner. I also completely understand your thoughts on this not being a worthy discussion to elaborate so thoroughly on. Howev...

Re: Shelter Graffiti

Tom, my thanks to you for providing legal documentation on the matter of graffiti in shelters or at least information, while not specifically related to the shelters, that is still probably applicable to the shelters. I loved your thorough examination of matters. It has made me all the more wiser. R...
