Re: Crazy Idea to Circumnavigate the Island?

Heck yes, Ed, do it! When you get home you won't be thinking, "Well that wasn't worth it!" But you may regret not doing it. Over the years I've met a couple different people doing similar trips, although maybe not every stop. A couple of thoughts on the itinerary: depending on your solitar...

Re: Four day canoe trip

If you're experienced canoe trippers, that's a perfectly doable trip, although another day would be better. I assume by "ferry shuttle" you mean the water taxi run by the RH Lodge--in fact that's the only way this works. A more typical trip is going the opposite direction, McCargoe to Chip...

Either not enough sun to charge, or no one's there to fix something that broke--in which case it could be out until April or May.

Re: Comprehensive descriptions of trails and campsites?

I was just reading my DuFresne guide book. It is a first edition, first printing from my first trip in 1984. I'm planning a second trip for this summer. I'm thinking not much has changed with regard to trails. Is that a reasonable assumption? I believe the trail(s) between Feldtmann and Windigo hav...

Re: Comprehensive descriptions of trails and campsites?

This book is considered the definite guide book for Isle Royale: https://www.irkpa.org/product/0151-foot-trails-water-routes-5th-edition/884 There's also campground info on this site: http://www.isleroyale.info/campgrounds.html Note that outhouses have not been stocked with TP since the COVID era--n...

Re: Taking own boat to IR on the Queen - problem

Sounds to me like the best possible solution :D . I have an HX300 and have had pretty good luck getting weather forecasts. Sometimes on the north side only Thunder Bay comes in decent so know some basic conversions, eg meters/seconds for wind and meters for waves. I love all the boat in sites. You k...

I believe it's an old wooden fire tower.

Somehow I missed the obvious. Apparently it's behind the slag pile, which I stood right next to, a few steps off the trail.

Re: West end spring trip

I did the loop the end of May a few yrs ago and trails were very wet and muddy. Very thankful I decided to bring high gaiters, which helped keep water out of the boots. Lots of mud holes over the toes and a couple of spots with water higher than the ankles. Trekking poles were also my dear friend na...

Re: TR: 5/25-5/29, 2022 [Hiking] [Windigo to Malone Bay via Feldtmann Loop]

Thanks for the report. I did the Feldtmann loop a few years back at the same time of year, and it was also rather wet and cold, but still a great trip. Did you seen any moose at Feldtmann? They were all over the campground and in the lake that year. I also appreciate the nervousness of getting picke...

Re: Taking own boat to IR on the Queen - problem

There's a few, but not a lot of power boaters on this forum, so don't know how much feedback you'll get. But I understand there's an Isle Royale boaters group on Facebook you may want to pose the question to. I do know that if you rent a boat from the lodge that you'll be limited to Rock Harbor and ...

Re: Looking for a specific ISRO map

Sounds like a long shot, but if it does exist, it's probably buried on an NPS server. I did a cursory search here and didn't find anything, but it may be somewhere if you're motivated to dig into it ... https://www.nps.gov/subjects/gisandmapping/tools-and-data.htm You could also try calling and/or e...

Re: Trip planning

I think you could make both Todd H and Chippewa H with 8 days, but it all depends on your daily mileage, of course. Choosing between them would be tough for me, so I'll call it arbitrary, but they're both great if you can hit them both. Hatchet is fine, but not esp special, although a possible stop ...

Re: Accessible Camping

Mud holes depend on the depth. Which all depends on the weather, of course. On the whole, things tend to be wetter/muddier earlier in the season from the snow melt. When I was at Windigo a few years ago in June, there were a couple of large nasty ones in the campground, but I would hope (and presum...
