Todd Harbor questions

I know this has been asked before, but I can’t find it. At Todd Harbor, where is the waterfall? Is it off the trail or along the beach? How far away is it from the shelter? How far past the group campsites are the large rocks I have read about? And a bonus question dealing with the Feldtmann Lake tr...

Re: Campsites Space

Yes, you should be able to set up all 3 tents in 1 site.
Daisy Farm has shelters all 6 of you can share.

West Chickenbone is my favorite trail camp.

Re: Minong Ridge - good idea?

Nicky - I'll speak as the Dad in your trip. My daughter and I did the Minong in 2013. See the trail report called "Kari and Wally tackle the Minong 8/10/13 - 8/15/13". I have been to Isle Royale 8 times. 4 have been with my daughter Kari. She also spent time on camp staffs. In fact, when I...

Re: Minong trail

My daughter and I hiked the Minong in August 2013. You can look through the trail reports for details. "Kari and Wally do the Minong".

Re: Ranger Programs

I attended two at Rock Harbor. One was on the shipwrecks of IR and one dealt with Loons and their calls. Candy did the presentation at Daisy Farm on the Moose/Wolf relationship and how to connect with IR spiritually. The one at Windigo dealt with the copper mining that occurred earlier. All in all, ...

Re: Stream Crossing just before Little Todd (heading West)

Here is a picture of my daughter about to cross. As Tom mentioned, "The Bridge" was rather sketchy and springy. The water was moving along at a pretty good clip too. The trail down to Little Todd was overgrown, but not to bad. The campsite and beach are beautiful.

I personally would try and find a friend to come with you. Not only will you have a great experience together, it's just safer.

Re: Favorite scenic view, spot, lookout

There is an overlook between Windigo and Feldtmann Lake that was exceptional beautiful. There is a high cliff on the trail from Feldtmann Lake to Siskiwit. There is also the view from Huginnin Cove, Little Todd and Todd Harbor. Heck, I even like the view from the porch outside the Windigo store.

Re: TR 8/11 - 8/19 2015. Kari and Wally hike the East end.

I know I will hike this trail (tentatively set for 2017). I'll probably be coming from Malone Bay to Todd Harbor to Hatchet Lake. Even if I have to break that 11 mile hike into two days, I think I can make it to the West end of Siskiwit Lake and a water source. I was thinking of experiencing a back ...

Re: Itinerary Suggestions

There are many great campsites located on the East end of the island. 3-Mile, Daisy Farm, Lane Cove, Moskey Basin, Lake Ritchie, W. Chickenbone. All are within the Rock Harbor area without any death marches. If you take a plane, your options explode. Like Tightlines mentioned, get the Trails Illustr...

Glad you got to stop at Little Todd. That is one of my favorite camps. My daughter and I did the Minong going the other way in 2013. It was very challenging . . . as advertised.
Thanks for sharing your report.

Re: Getting Stuck on the Island

It's never happened to me in 8 trips (knock on wood). I always have food leftover because I wasn't hungry enough to eat it after hiking. I never bring extra, it just happens.

Re: 8/24/15 - 8/28/15 Trip Report

Stephen - Welcome to the Forum. I agree with you regarding the ride over on the Queen. I've been to IR 8 times and 7 of the trips were from the Minnesota side. My daughter and I were there in August and covered a lot of the same ground you traveled over. (See Kari and Wally report). Lane Cove was be...

Re: TR 8/11 - 8/19 2015. Kari and Wally hike the East end.

Some parts were overgrown, but I never lost the trail hiking this section. As noted, we happened to be there with full packs and hiked in warm and humid conditions.

The trail into Lane Cove was challenging. I'm 56 years old and figured that first day hike was 8.20 miles, which is pushing it for me.

TR 8/11 - 8/19 2015. Kari and Wally hike the East end.

TR 8/11 - 8/19 2015. Kari and Wally hike the East end. In 2014, I brought my wife Stacie to Isle Royale for her first visit. She isn’t into backpacking or camping like I am, so I planned a leisurely trek around the Western end including Windigo and a hike out to Huginnin Cove. After I got back, I r...
