Re: 1st IR trip - June 19-27, 2021

Here's our ugly mugs. I hope to meet you too! Here is my mug shot. I will be the tall, thin dirt bagger with a green Wenonah canoe! I think spending an extra day in Washington Creek/Harbor is a good way to end a memorable trip. There are some good day hiking options. You can rent a canoe/kayak and ...

Re: Isle Royale Queen III

Glad to hear that you are one of the lucky ones who never had the awful experience of being seasick! I can imagine that there was a chain reaction with the experience you witnessed! The old boat sure does have a bad reputation that hopefully the latest version can overcome.

Re: Isle Royale Queen III

Treeplanter, did any of your trips on the Isle Royale Queen III ever involve "feeding the fish?"

I will admit to feeding the fish once on the Voyager II.

Looks like a great plan/trip! Like others have said, you will be back!

I just saw your dates. I am tentatively planning on taking the Voyageur II out to Isle Royale and back to Grand Portage on those same dates! I look forward to meeting you and talking about your trip.

Re: Canoe route suggestions/general questions

I pulled out some old photos of the portage and posted them in "Pictures". Ingo, looking at your pictures explains why it was as bad as I remember! I traveled from Duncan Bay to Tobin Harbor and had a difficult time finding the portage to begin with. I didn't stop at the top and continued...

Re: Canoe route suggestions/general questions

Belle Isle is my favorite, though, and almost always seem to be treated to spectacular sunrises. Ingo always has good information to share and I have surely benefited from his experience/advice in my past trips to Isle Royale! You cannot go wrong in using his advice! I am adding a picture taken on ...

"Is it reasonable/possible to hike around Dresor Lake? I'm now thinking maybe Feldtmann Loop and Huginnin Loop with a hike out to SLD and back OR a hike out to SLD, around the lake to NLD and then back to the Huginnin Loop on the Mingong...?" NO. Not recommended in any way for anyone. I t...

Re: Windigo side new gift shop/restaurant

i will miss sitting on the deck of the old shop after being out on the trail for a number of days. I have very fond memories of that—even the coffee and frozen pizza tasted great after hiking—and the view was great too! JerryB, I concur with you! I have fond memories of sitting on that deck drinkin...

Re: Mason Tract Pathway All Season Getaway

Thanks for this! I happen to be in Grayling right now, sneaking in some very icy xc skiing before rededicating my life to Zoom meetings. I really loved the stretch of the Au Sable river that runs through Hartwick Pines, and now I know where I can find more trail like that! Torpified, somehow I knew...

Re: Mott Island

Looking closer, there are three sets of tracks going across and then dropping off the main dock- thinking those are otter, and then there are a couple of other sets of a different animal going across the dock and nosing around the maintenance offices- fox is my best guess. It is nice to know that t...

Re: Mott Island

Looks like maybe a group of otters. Most of the trail looks more solid with a few places where they are jumping a bit.
That would be my guess too Midwest Ed! It would have been fun to catch them playing on the Web Cam!

Mott Island

This being the winter season and the temperature being cold outside, I find myself looking forward to summer and checking the Isle Royale Mott Island Web camera often. When I checked it today, I saw some tracks in the light dusting of snow at Mott Island. I wonder what has been wandering around the ...

Re: 1st time solo traveler.

Thank you sooooooo much for this valuable info. As for water, I planned to refill at the campgrounds. Is it accurate that all campgrounds offer water? there is access to water ...you still have to filter boil and/or treat it. In many cases the source is lake superior or an inland lake thesneakymonk...

Re: Clothing in June

HoosierHiker, I would only add that I always pack a down/puffy jacket. Mine weighs about 1 lb.(?) and packs down to the size of a cantaloupe. I always go to Isle Royale in June and I have experienced temperatures as low as 40 degrees. Of course I layer my clothing according to the conditions.

Re: Clothing in June

ps and I do really wear my headnet: not only does it keep the flies out of my eyes, it makes for a delightful genre of pratfalls involving attempts to eat when I've gotten so used to it that I forget that I'm wearing it. torpified is correct about the head net. I tried eating and or drinking with i...
