I'm not sure when the store opens. You could give them a call and find out. (906) 482-0984

9 nights solo at that time of year would be a great trip.

Re: Guide to handheld VHF's
I picked up a cheap little Baofeng UV5R to mess with this winter. For less than $30, I thought it would be a worthwhile way to putter around. No ham license so I just listen to HT, but it's a decent little radio once you figure it out. http://www.amazon.com/BaoFeng-UV-5R-Dual-Radio-Black/dp/B007H4VT...

Re: May Weather & Hope
Thanks for the link. I think I'm going to try to head up and do the Frost River Loop sometime around Labor Day. I'm hoping it won't be an early winter and be snowing in September. I may be in for a rude awakening on each end of summer. It's been a slow march for winter to get here. It was in the 60'...

May Weather & Hope
The boy and I are talking about going to the island in May to celebrate his 21st birthday. His spring semester is done on 5/12. Depending on what classes he takes over the summer, he may start as early as the week of the 22nd or as late as the first week in June. If he's got the early slate, that me...

Really great read. I was only familiar with the story of the American. The rest were new to me. Thanks for posting this.

There is an overlook between Windigo and Feldtmann Lake that was exceptional beautiful. This one? http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/indyhooky/Isle%20Royale%20September%202014/P1040438_zps7732fa70.jpg http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g342/indyhooky/Isle%20Royale%20September%202014/P1040439...

Re: Favorite scenic view, spot, lookout
I certainly haven't seen all the sites on the island but my favorite views to date are sunrise at Moskey and then sunset at rainbow cove. The view from the Ojibway fire tower is nice too.

This is the type of person that demands WiFi in National Parks  http://i.imgur.com/zhHAttI.png http://i.imgur.com/zgrQFRF.png You want it around the visitor centers and such, great, as long as it's kept it out of the back country for as long as possible. Eventually, technology will make it ...

Any idea where the January photo is taken?
For that matter, what harbor do you think is in the November photo?

Re: 1st timer Itinerary
Moskey to Lane will be a hump. Moskey is my favorite spot on the island, but it fills up quickly. The day hike to Scoville is very scenic. I've never been to either Chippewa or McCargoe, so I'll give you my perspective as to which one I'd do as a first timer. Chippewa is a dead end, so you'll be see...

Glad you got your brownies. Sad to hear you lost all the male members of your crew though. I hope you and Madeline have many more good times on the island.

I saw 10-14', subsiding to 4-7. That was crazy enough. I can't imagine 27'.

I'd guess wind, heavy snow load, ice or some combination of the 3.
