Re: Decent instant coffee

Thanks, Hooky. That seems to be the prevailing opinion and I have no problems with it. I was curious because i have heard coffee grounds described as “black gold” for backyard compost piles. You're welcome, Jerry. To shed some light on the 'black gold" - My compost pile gets grounds every day ...

In the "Isle Royale Web Board" view (essentially the same), it's "Mark subforums read".

Re: Wild Cow Parsnip

Yea that was me that posted it. Was everywhere on the feltdmann loop and areas around Windigo (including all the walkways in and out of camp/store/visitor center/docks). Nasty stuff. Thanks, called Tecnu about use for cow parsnip, have not heard back. My guess is you'll get an answer similar to thi...

Great trip report. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I'm missing those days where you hike and then swim off the dock for 2 hours, multiple days in a row. I'm worn out just thinking about watching them do that.

Re: Fire ban

Yes it includes the grills. Just got off the island. Rangers were walking campsite to campsite letting people know when it happened. Didn’t see anyone breaking the rules after the ban. However, someone sadly thought it was ok to have a fire in one of the tent spots on feltdmann. Burnt earth and sti...

I assume those don't subside on inland lakes, but rather get worse with time and sunlight.

Re: PLB vs. satellite communicator

I was on a boundary waters trip and my partner was having medical issues. We were able to use his Inreach tethered to his phone to arrange an earlier pick up at another entry point that we were able to get to, instead of just hitting the button to come get us. The 2 way communication was invaluable ...

Re: Water filter

Hi all- I'll be coming to the island in August for the first time and am in my final prep stages, but just noticed today that the Park website recommends both filtration AND chemical treatment. HERE: https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/drinking-water.htm ] Any thoughts here? We were just plannin...

Re: Sandals on Greenstone Ridge

The Greenstone to S. Desor is smooth, well packed and slightly uphill. 9 pm eastern will be close to dark dark at that time of the year, maybe 30 min of decent light left? You'll know when you hit Island Mine if you'll make it to S. Desor before dark. Personally, I think it's very doable if you're o...

Re: 7/04/1999 Derecho

I've heard some stories from people who were in the BWCA when that happened. That's some scary stuff. 2 Lightning caused fire started in the BWCA in the last few days. Still great deal of unburned blowdowns from the derecho left there. I saw that one big one was going up west of Insula and it looks...

Re: Sandals on Greenstone Ridge

I like my toenails, plus I don't like pebbles and debris in my footwear. I couldn't imagine wearing sandals, even my closed toe Keens for those reasons. With that said, I agree with torp; "If it works for you, it works for you". There are plenty of things I do that get odd looks from others.

Re: Tents in Shelters

........Now picnic tables in the shelters... We had a rain day at Duncan Bay Narrows many years back. We moved the picnic table into our shelter to have something to sit on. Next day dawned sunny and bright, so the table went back outside. If only everyone who did the first part of moving the table...
