Re: food help on first trip
If you e-mail privately at plainwelllaw at cs.com, I'll send you my 14 day meal planner along with an inventory of meals you can pre-make at home with a bunch of baggies and a dehydrator. I started doing dehydrated and health foods last year and it beats the heck out of the freeze dried stuff. Only ...

Re: Ice Caves and Ice Climbing in the UP
Who won Phase 10 and who led the show tunes?! We were up to our cottage in the UP last weekend and had to snowshoe in. 5 foot drifts in the driveway, shed door was drifted shut, ice all the way to Canada, but it was still beautiful. Cutters and ice breakers started work up there this week clearing t...

Re: Winter Study
I hope the ice blows out next week! I don't care about your fishing! I've missed the Voyageur II twice now--one because of jury duty, the other because of ice and engine problems. I don't want to hit the Grand Portage trifecta this year! I'm pre-packed, have my food list, and am warming up th...

Re: Winter Study
Now, we watch the ice in hopes the first boat runs on May 9th. Right now, the Canadian ice survey shows Isle Royale surrounded by ice 3 feet thick and clear to the Canadian and US shore. Kind of looks like an oblong bulls eye in a sea of red. Or, the one profitable spot in a sea of red ink.

Current Lake Superior/Isle Royale Lake Conditions
I found this link to the current ice conditions on Lake Superior and around Isle Royale:
http://ice-glaces.ec.gc.ca/app/WsvPrdCa ... 0&Lang=eng
It is updated every couple of days. Ice is pretty thick right now, but let's think happy thoughts!

Free Gas for Ride from Grand Portage to UP
A buddy of mine and I are catching the first boat out of Grand Portage. He had to be back on the 17th, but I want to stay until the 24th. Rather than take two cars, I thought I'd try to catch a ride back to the Eastern UP with someone coming back on the 24th. If you are going back on the 24th and ha...

Re: Ice Out?
In 2005, after paddling around Blake Point and landing at Merrit Cove Camp, I thought I'd give my head a little rinse (I was still wearing my full dry suit). I slipped into the water, floated out from the shore, dipped my head in the water, and promptly got the worst external brain freeze I've ever ...

Re: Ice Out?
I ordered my season pass this afternoon and one of the park supervisors commented that this has been a very cold winter. I told him I was on the first boat on the 9th of May and he said it was colder this year than last. Last year, the Voyageur was delayed in May because the ice in Washington Harbor...

Re: Water filter recommendation?
I've been using the PUR-Hiker for years. It has served flawlessly. The only routine maintenance I do is replace the cartridge every couple of years and lube the 0-rings. I've never had it clog up and if I'm at a place where the water is silty (like Island Mine!) I wrap the intake line with a coffee ...

And, it would be in your best interest to suggest where I should go! (I know, it's going to be too good a straight line to ignore). Cuz, when I'm fishing IR, "Fish Fear Me!" or was it "Trish Fears Me?" I could never get that right.

Re: Documentary Updates
Ya gotta love it. I've been having trouble sleeping lately. Seems I'm lying in bed at night going through my checklist and I wake up in the middle of the night planning the trip. I can't sleep, so I check the forum. What a reward to see these videos.

What is the Best Route
OK, I'm on the first boat in May and I want to do something a little different. Depending on the wind direction and forecast, I'd like to paddle from McCargo Cove to Washington Harbor or Malone Bay to Washington Harbor. If you've done either or both routes, besides established sites like Big Todd, L...
