Re: First time Isle Royale visit.

"Living happily in the out-of-doors means getting down to the bare essentials. The man who goes in with all the claptrap necessary to give him a semi-civilized existence in the wilderness is defeating at once the very purpose for which he went in. " I know people who take this really seri...

Re: First time Isle Royale visit.

When you had Verizon you were probably accessing Bell Mobility in Thunder Bay. Cinci Bell is an ATT partner and you probably had a GSM phone roaming on Rogers. I'm pretty sure they had converted over from TDMA by 2004. Most people would be amazed just how far their little handheld phones can reach. ...

Re: Compass for trail hiking

You can also think of a compass as something along the line of moleskin or a laxitive. You may not need it but it's a lot better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. We aren't talking about packing a Brunton (If you're not familiar with them http://www.brunton.com/product.php?...

Re: First time Isle Royale visit.

In 2004 I got cell service from the Greenstone in the area of Mt. Ojibway...It was international roaming out of Thunder Bay, Ont. You can always rent a sat. phone for a week....several companies online. What was your cellular carrier? I'm really not interested in packing a sat phone. I own an Iridi...

Re: Boots

I have a problem fitting boots (and shoes). I use custom orthotic inserts and my shoes and boots have to be selected to fit the inserts. This greatly limits my choices and means that I no longer mail-order boots. What I presently use are a pair of light-weight "Keen" hybrid boots. Molded s...

Re: Camera Question

I mostly carry a small Canon these days. I picked it because it had a viewfinder in addition to the LCD screen. I'm concerned because it uses a special rectangular rechargable battery. I don't know if the battery will last through ten days of picture taking without a recharge. On another note. Digit...

Re: First time Isle Royale visit.

I'm told AT&T phones can work from the rocks above Chippewa. Have not been able to confirm this myself. It is about 20 km from the nearest bit of Canada and a bit more from Pigeon Point to various spots on the north side of Isle Royale. GSM (e.g. ATT & T-Mobile) has a design range limitatio...

Re: How'd you get your screen name?

I believe that most of these "screen names" are sort of throw-backs to the days of CB radio "handles", where folks didn't want to use their real names because they were doing things they really shouldn't, like evading the 55 MPH speed limit. I've never believed in an online alter...

Re: First time Isle Royale visit.

First of all, welcome to the board and good luck in your planning for Isle Royale. It's a wonderful place. Thank you. Two of our other wonderful places are Horn Island off Pascagoula, Miss. and the St. Joseph Peninsula in NW Florida. Isle Royale will be a very different sort of wonderful. I would s...

First time Isle Royale visit.

My brother and I are planning our first visit to Isle Royale. We are a couple of South Coasters (from the Gulf Coast) who enjoy island camping and were looking for some place fairly cool and not too strenuous, since we both have let ourselves get out of shape. I've been reading this forum and search...

Obscured registration code too obscured.

I just registered for this forum. I had to try about 6 times because I could not read the obscured code at the bottom of the registration page. I have normal vision (for an old baby boomer) and am a member of about 20 other boards, most of wich use this type of obscured code, and this is the most tr...
