Re: One word for Isle Royale National Park

Obviously there’s a benefit (safety) but personally I think the island would lose some of its charm for me if they installed a cell tower. I like the remoteness and the ability to disconnect. My career choice has me tied to my phone and if I have cell service I’ll be working whether or not I want to...

Re: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste

The most eco friendly is to not use soap at all. “Embrace the stink!”, as they say. Personally I’ve found taking a soapless dip in Lake Superior a couple times a trip does wonders. Then a $5 shower in windigo or rock harbor before departing. Please don’t use any soaps or shampoos in the waterways (E...

Re: One thing you wish you knew...

Consider bringing a good-sized rain tarp. It makes cooking and relaxing in camp so much more pleasant on rainy days. Also, when hung across the screen wall of a shelter, gives some relief from blowing rain and wind coming off the lake. We're very happy with this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/produ...

Re: One thing you wish you knew...

That once you go there, NOTHING else compares and you’ll want to just keep going back to the island.

Re: help with trail option

You trip plan reminds me of our first one to the island (minus the boat pick up). Either trail is nice. You'll enjoy it either way.

Re: Windigo side new gift shop/restaurant

The sneakymonkey, you and your husband will enjoy this route! It is one of the nicest routes on the island I believe, and I think it is underrated. Feldtmann Lake is one of my favorite tent camp sites and Rainbow Cove is a must do! Hugginin Cove is a beautiful place to see the sun set over Lake Sup...

Re: Windigo side new gift shop/restaurant

I do have fond memories of meeting and talking "trail" with other hikers right after we finished the minong on that deck. Hopefully it has a similar atmosphere. I do love the charm of windigo. Thanks for all the replies. I guess we will all find out very soon! Starting the countdown to ou...

Windigo side new gift shop/restaurant

Sadly we missed our trip last year but we heard rumors that a new gift shop/ restaurant were being constructed on the Windigo side. Does anyone know anything about it? Curious where it will be and if it’ll make it more “rock harbor” like. I’m personally a fan of the “quiet” Windigo but I could see h...
