Re: 3 new Weather Bouys added to South Lake Superior

I wish there was some interest in the northern portion of the lake's conditions. The three new bouys are too close to shore for any real navigation purposes or information that could help with making a decision to sail or not. One on each end of the island 7-8 miles from shore would really give a go...

Re: Nasty Weather

Both boats from Grand Portage made their scheduled trips on Wednesday. The weather did flush a few folks off the island a few days early. Wednesday pre daylight hours brought nearly 4 inches of rain with more showers throughout the day and Into Thursday. Forecast is for dryer, but warm and to get wa...

Re: When will VII start taking reservations

I can't tell you how long it will take to get a group permit approved, too long according to some I haved talked with in the past. None the less, you should NOT make boat reservations until you have the permit. It is too soon to tell what availability will be, but if you submit the permit app now yo...

Re: When will VII start taking reservations

Good news, the site is up and running. One little hick up that was handled quickly. Hopefully everyone will find the new system easier to navigate and less confusing than the past systems.

Re: When will VII start taking reservations

Hopefully it will be in a week or less. The new system is very close, actually it is working fine in all the tests. The last issue to be solved is linking the online system, website and the cloud server, there has been some issues there that are being worked on as we speak. The news and events link ...

Re: New Park Fee Collection method - Online now available!

Mike, I asked in my conversation with the park last week. They told me they would give refunds, it will be credited back to the card. In order for this to happen you will need to contact the park, they will require some sort of proof of purchase and arrival and departure dates and then they can init...

Re: 2015 Voyageur II and Sea Hunter Schedules and rates

Mike, sorry about your plans being turned upside down. The late start this year has more to do with the Coast Guard than anything else. Granted, the last two springs presented some challenges that even prevented us from getting in the water, let alone sailing. Coast Guard inspection always fall in e...

Visitor perception of "private" areas on Isle Royale?

A story of some visitors to the island in a sailboat this past week was told to me by a friend of mine who happens to be the resident at Fisherman's Home. A group of friends that assist with labor and materials needed for the maintenance of the buildings and grounds took the traditional "last t...

Re: Voyageur II opening trips delayed

Have done all I can given the weather. Ready to go in, we tried today, but the yard is too full of boats that normally would be in now, (Coast Guard bay bouy tender and pilot boat) and the travel-lift doesn't have enough room to manuever to get me to the water. Still lots of ice on the lake, 5 freig...

Still at the shipyard, at least a week away from leaving there. Won't get to Houghton without an ice breaker in there first and the river and Soo locks are plugged with ice and freighters.

Re: Voyageur II opening trips delayed

There is some good news in this winter that won't end. Despite over a foot of fresh snow Thursday, the ice on Grand Portage Bay went out. Warmer temps are forecast in addition to another winter storm warning next week. The sun has taken a big toll on the snow cover and until yesterday bare ground wa...
