Re: suggestions for canoe trip

Hi Dawn, Welcome to the forums. A couple of things that would help to know is (a) are you planning to come from the U.P. or from Grand Portage, and (b) what experience do you have both paddling and portaging? My favorite suggestion, coming over on Voyageur II from Grand Portage, is from McCargoe Cov...

Re: McCargoe Cove to Windigo

I haven't done it, but I like it! Well, I have to, it's the exact same trip I'm doing this summer, except with an additional stop at Island Mine. I've mostly paddled on the island, so it's time to see more of the interior and do the western Greenstone.

I'd call the G.P. Lodge and Casino. If not the same folks, they may be able to help.

Re: Best moderate route for seclusion

I'd seriously look at the Feldtmann loop--haven't done it myself, but hope to some day. I believe it's about 10 miles from Feldtmann Lake to Siskiwit Bay, but otherwise all other days are <=8 miles. From what I understand, it gives you a little bit of most everything the island has to offer, and few...

Posted Tues (4/24) on FB by the IRKPA: "She's on her way! The Ranger III departed just after 9:30 this beautiful morning--the first trip of freight season to set up National Park Service operations on Isle Royale for 2012. Among the passengers are members of the wolf/moose study team, along wit...

Re: Paddling Reports re "5 Fingers" NE end of IR?

I would really like to take a day trip and paddle thru the keyhole and across the Amygdaloid Channel to the hiking trail of the arch and overlook to Amygdaloid Lake. Can anyone talk about experiences paddling the Amygdaloid. We would only do so in relatively calm conditions. Roughly how long a padd...

I don't know that you can assume those 120 views were by human beings.

Re: GRT FKT - travel itinerary

Boat rental is a great idea. My crew is only there to support me (its my Dad) and I am sure he would be willing as then he could hike up to Lake Louise and see me finish, take pictures, etc. I will add that to my notes. Although you will probably beat him there, assuming all goes well. The Voyageur...

Mike Tremblay's book has elevation graphs of all the trails (http://www.isleroyale.info).

Re: GRT FKT - travel itinerary

The only record I could find of anyone even doing this in < 24 hours was someone who posted on a backpacker.com website with his username indicating 10 hrs and change. When I worked at R.H. in '79 two employees, college aged females, hiked it in a day. Don't remember the time, but they arrived in W...

Re: GRT FKT - travel itinerary

Second thoughts on getting from Hidden Lake to R.H. Since you have a crew and said money is not an issue, just have them rent a motor boat from the lodge. It will be more flexible, more room, and quicker than a canoe, and avoid the timing issues--assuming your crew are friends who are willing to wai...

Re: GRT FKT - travel itinerary

Sounds like a good basic plan to me. A couple thoughts: - You can fly into Windigo and out of Rock Harbor, avoiding the need to get back to Windigo. In fact, I don't know any reason not to. - You could then make your Day 2 be any day the Voyageur II makes an outbound trip. In July when they do a ful...

Re: Canoe Seat Opinions

Personally I've never used a seat back, and never felt the need for one. In heavy waves and/or hard paddling, I'm probably kneeling anyways. But the original seat itself makes a huge difference--hate anything molded, plastic or aluminum. Wood frame (usually ash) with caning is the best, nylon webbin...
