So much awesomeness here! I bet Rock Harbor was both cool and creepy to be the only ones there, like in a ghost town of sorts. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad you got to get there.

Will do John. I just had to go back a page to check for your first name. Wasn't sure if when I see you I should refer to you as "Wild" or "Junkie." Two days at Chickenbone is a lovely thing. Hope to see you there enjoying it all.

Tom, I have done that trip or similar a few times and absolutely love it. Such a different view of the island. Have a wonderful time.

Saint John VI
I just rented a villa for my family for Thanksgiving week. Two-thirds of the island is US National Park, and our place will be neighboring the park, with a long, remote, and completely undeveloped beach (Reef Bay) just below us. I say undeveloped, but apparently there is an outhouse there that was b...

Re: Fishing pole and case worth the trouble?
I use a telescoping rod, usually a cheap Ugly Stick. Before the days of my NeoAir, I could simply roll it up inside my sleeping pad. Now I can just as easily roll it up inside my tent and never notice it's there while hiking. A few spoons and Mepps, leaders, and a hemostat are all I need. Minimal we...

Re: Planning a trip... thoughts?
Your best fishing will probably be at Feldtmann Lake. Don't be afraid to wade out a ways, most likely past the first weeds. I like spoons and mepps spinners. I don't think there are fish in Desor Lake. If fishing is a big part of your journey, consider working some of those inland lakes due south of...

Re: Trip possibilities, input welcome...
While I agree with everything said already, I did Trip A two years ago off the first boat, solo, and had a blast. Didn't see anyone between Windigo and Malone. The first and last days of hiking got long (I think I skipped Hatchet). Last year I did Trip B, in reverse, with a group of relative newcome...

Re: Intermediate or Whittlesey?
Hi Tom. You're going to have a lovely trip. I've only stopped at Intermediate long enough to chill and have lunch, never overnighted there. However, I'm content with that, and would choose Whittlesey over Intermediate every time. I love love love Whittlesey. There's just something about it. Now you'...

Re: Minong Suggestions--end of May
A couple years ago I took the first boat and hiked from Windigo along the Minong, turned south between Little Todd and Todd, and finished my journey at Malone Bay. Most of the hike was done before trail crews arrived, and a storm had knocked down many trees, so that increased my chances of losing tr...

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2013 edition
Fonix, I've been thinking about the Petzl Nao as well. That dividend will make it a lot easier. I bet we could see each other's glow from opposite ends of the island with those on.

I have a store bought one from Midwest Mountaineering. It looks similar to what John made. It's much easier and more comfortable than not having one.

Re: Route suggestions for first timers
I'm sorry, but as long as we're on the topic, what weirds me out about those open SHT toilets is how my dog is able to watch me. It's downright creepy.
